Welcome to Orientation Get the best start to your USQ learning journey by attending Orientation University Welcome The University Welcome is the official starting point of your Orientation. Come along and bring your family and friends to meet your university. Date: Monday, 17 February 2020 Time: 9:00am to 9:45am Location: D Block Auditorium
Orientation checklist Remember to bring your student number and password with you to the on- campus sessions. Try to complete all of the items on the list below during your Orientation: Attend the Orientations sessions specific to your discipline and one of each of the support sessions at the day and time that suits you best Attend one of each of the Support Information Sessions on the day and time that suits you best Visit Student Life and find out how you can make the most of your time at uni by joining clubs and societies, participating in sport and recreation activities and getting involved in Student Representation and Leadership Programs Check your university email account (Umail) as you may already be receiving important information from the University Explore the USQ Current Students website at www.usq.edu.au/current-students Buy the required course materials and texts from the bookshop on-campus, or second hand, but make sure they match the current requirements of the course Get your Student ID New students can collect their USQ Student ID between 10:00am and 4:00pm each day of Orientation at the D Block Security Office. It is important to obtain your ID card for: • identification • entry to exams • building access • printing and photocopying • library borrowing • public transport concessions (where available).
Discipline Orientation Sessions * Attend the sessions specific to your discipline Discipline Date Time Venue Session Description Aviation Tuesday 10:30am - A401 This is an informal welcome for new Aviation students 18 February 11:30am in Springfield, where you will meet Aviation Staff, Other students and hear about the Aviation program. Civil, Agricultural Monday 10:00am - B203 Welcome & Environmental 17 February 11:30am Students are invited to meet some of the friendly staff in Engineering and the Agricultural, Environmental, Civil and Construction Construction disciplines and gain an understanding of the different programs offered in the School of Civil Engineering and Surveying. We will discuss what you can expect from the classes you will attend and our expectations of you as a USQ student. You will have the opportunity to meet other students who will be studying with you and to find out about the academic support that we offer. 11:30am - B203 Time Management 12:00pm This session will give you a broad understanding on how you can manage your study courses as a project manager focusing particularly on time and making use of other course resources in strategic ways to achieve success 1:00pm - B203 Student support for Engineering students 2:00pm Writing and submitting assignments at university is a complex process. This session will show you how to access Engineering specific support pages for study, assignment preparation and mathematics help. This includes learning how to request assistance from your Engineering Librarian, and Academic and Mathematics Learning Advisors, as well as being introduced to Smart Thinking, a tutoring and writing feedback service. Finally, you will also be introduced to Turn It In, a tool which helps you avoid plagiarism. 2:00pm - B203 Launching your Engineering career 3:00pm It’s never too soon to prioritise career planning. Beginning early will enable you to make the most of the many opportunities university will offer you to create the career you really want. This session will provide you with an introduction to career thinking, to the team who can support you in this and to the actions you can take from the very start to commence your career building. 3:00pm - B203 Afternoon Tea with teaching staff 4:00pm Commerce Monday 10:00am - B434 Staff will welcome you to the School and provide you with 17 February 11:30pm important information about studying Commerce. Creative Arts Monday 10:00am - B204A/B This session will welcome you to the School of Creative 17 February 12:00pm Arts and introduce you to teaching and support staff.

This session will show you how to access Engineering specific support pages for study, assignment preparation and mathematics help. Law and Justice Tuesday 10:00am - A519 This session welcomes students into the School of Law 18 February 12:00pm and Justice and introduces them to key people who will be supporting them through their studies including their fellow students, first year law academics and members of the vibrant USQ Law Society. The session includes a ‘Meet and Mingle Morning Tea’, as well as a Tour of the School. The session provides an overview of the Law Programs. Management Monday 10:00am - A401 The session will focus on introducing Undergraduate and Enterprise 17 February 12:00pm students to the range of specialisations available within the School and on introducing Post Graduate students to the current and future range of Post Graduate offerings. The orientation will also introduce core course leaders and include some tips for Getting Started with study.

The session will also outline the careers and post-graduate opportunities, course electives, program expectations (including mandatory requirements) and professional placement Surveying Monday 10:00am - B435 This session will start with a broad introduction to the Surveying 17 February 12:00pm staff and the Surveying degrees. Senior Academics will then be available for 15 minute one on one sessions, where students can ask whatever burning questions they might have about their Surveying course, being a surveyor or attending university in general. But it’s not all work - students will also have the opportunity to learn to fly small drones and then can pit their newly found skills against an academic! Tertiary Monday 10:00am - B210 Orientation is the best way to start your learning journey in TPP. Preparation 17 February 11:30am At this drop in session you will meet TPP staff, be provided with Program important information about your program, and get the chance to ask any questions you might have.
