DINING SPECIALS Tanglin Orchid Gin (ABV 40%) $108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle) A modern, smooth gin, the pine of the Juniper is unmistakably there. The herbaceous flavour notes come from classic gin botanicals but the twist comes from Indian Amchoor, a powered form of green unripe mango that adds an extra citrus note and their not so secret ingredient is in the name, Vanilla Planifolia Orchid. Tanglin Mandarin Chilli Gin (ABV 40%) $108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle) For this expression, the focus is on a citrus nose, and the gin is finished with chilli and ginger to give the taste buds a lift with a slight tingle on the lips. Tanglin Black Powder Gin (ABV 58%) $108+ per bottle (U.P $168+ per bottle) Named after the accidental discovery of gunpowder by a Chinese Alchemist who was searching for the Elixir of Life, the gin’s flavour comes from half the Juniper berries used in its production being bruised, as well as adding whole fresh lemons to the core Orchid Gin. SPORTS & FITNESS FOOTBALL: BCFC 2020 – a review By Paul Hackett After what has been an unprecedented year, post COVID -19, we somehow now seem to arrived at the end of the year! What a year it has been! Reflecting on a year without tours, with leagues cut short and no 11 a-side football since the early months of this year, it makes you wonder what we may fill this article with…… However, with the gallant efforts of the committee we have been able to deliver football [of sorts] with 5 man pods maintaining social distancing working with the Cage to ensure that we maintain the fitness of the members. The Social side has seen a mix of Zoom calls, challenges including “Chug the Mug” Jim’s Circuit Breaker Challenge & The Round the World Challenge, all of which have kept us on our toes, engaged and active during the lockdown. We lost some good friends to a mixture of University, new A big thanks to Kenny Cowgill, Stew Frame, Mike Hughes opportunities and relocating to various locations, our best and of course Jim Rowan for coming up with the ideas wishes go to: and delivering them for the Section! Paul Smith and Linda who returned back to the UK, an unlikely keeper you may think, but a much loved and often surprisingly agile “Smithy” was a legend on tour and between the sticks! Paul McNamara and Sue, who moved to Valencia, the NBG [Natural Born Goalscorer] will be missed, but surprisingly NOT for his goals!!! A great tourist, always last at the bar with the youngsters and rarely on time for game or to tap in the crosses! We have also caught on trophies, with long overdue presentations give to the Players Player of the Year for 2019 being Mark Hughes & Billy “The Legend” Morgan finally receiving the much coveted award. We also saw Josh Simpson & Archie Ponds head off to University and Donners Junior leave for boarding school. We had Tom Hodge and Alex Davies back from University and playing , which was great. With only the occasional accident being reported so far! To the committee, a huge thanks for all of you efforts during what’s been a torrid year, we continue to serve up football, fitness, training, tennis and the occasional bike ride or two! Whilst we all hope that we will see the numbers permitted to play increase to a minimum of 10, we have looked to keep the training dynamic and Kenny has arranged BFA to provide, what is an excellent hour of training for the Section. It has been well received and if you have an interest to train between 5pm to 6pm or 6pm to 7pm on a Saturday with the Football Section please reach out to the Scores or the football section to sign up. SPORTS & FITNESS SQUASH: Squash section reboots the popular Social Handicap Round Robin By Omair After a hiatus of many months, the Squash section organised the first post-lockdown handicap round robin during the regular Saturday afternoon social timeslot. These popular round robin events have previously been held on the last Saturday social of each month, and after many months away there was a palpable sense of excitement from the section members keen to take part once more. Given the current restrictions around social distancing and the need to cap the number of players on and around the courts, the section arranged for the event to be split into 2 halves - an early and a late session. Each involved an hour of hectic where everybody plays everybody in pods of 5, with a semi-final to round off the session. The two semi-finalists met the following week for the big showdown. A special thank you goes to Keith Carpenter who reviewed and adjusted the handicap scores for all the players, including a healthy number of new section members who have recently joined the squash family at British Club. And congratulations to young James Nicholas who overcame his old man Ashley in the semi-final, and then won the final 2-1 against the “older” Nick Fell to take the title. We are already looking forward to the next instalment of the tournament in a month’s time. In addition, we are planning the annual end-of-year handicap tournament, with all eyes on Charlie Thomas to see if he can make it yet another victory this year. The draw has been made, and there will be more news to come in the next edition! 30 | NOV/DEC 2020
SPORTS & FITNESS TENNIS: British Club Tennis Section By Kate Yu Juan If Friday’s social tennis night is anything to go by, several members of the British Club find a friendly game of tennis at the end of the work week a great way to wind down and be ready for the weekend. The sessions are held every Friday between 7pm and 10pm and you can count on a group of 10 to 12 players to turn up. Some like a competitive but friendly game, while most players are there to relax, exchange some good-humoured banter and hit a few good shots to stretch out their muscles at the end of the week. The aim of the night is to keep people playing as much as possible. If a few players have to step out for a while, those left on the court will play four games before rotating those on the side lines back into play. As you can imagine, with players from different parts of the world, you can learn some useful phrases in various languages of encouragement or self-admonishment! The night’s tennis usually ends with players enjoying a few drinks and a meal, especially on the first Friday of the month with the Tennis Section providing a complimentary drink. (On hold at the moment due to the current COVID-19 regulations) There is always room for new players, so if you want to check it out and join in, here is what you need to know: Friday Mixed Socials: All are welcomed To register: Sport Section / Pro Shop (6410 1173) To join: Friday Tennis WhatsApp group / Kate Yu Juan (9735 7992) OCT 2020 | 31
