Entrant categories Master A Barber holding a qualification in Barbering and working in the barbering industry. Trainee A barber signed into a formal barbering training programme or apprenticeship with a NZQA recognised tertiary education organisation. Open Anyone practicing barbering for at least 5 years. This section is open to hairdressers practicing barbering and practitioners with no formal qualification. General Competition guidelines There may be specific guidelines for individual events, please read these carefully. 1. Each contestant will be required to bring a model for each section. a. For hair cut categories, models must have at least 6 weeks growth from last haircut. b. For the shave, model must have clearly visible stubble on both their face and neck 2. No preliminary work is to be completed on the model before the competition. 3. Judging will consist of a panel of judges. Judging will take place following completion of each event. Focus for judgement will be on the end result as presented by model, with the exception of the Shave, where judges will be on the floor during the competition. Scrutineers will be on the floor during the competition to ensure equipment has been tagged and health and safety requirements are met. Winners, and second/third place-getters will be decided by judges after each event. Judging will focus on the end result as seen on the model. 4. The Hairdressers Health Regulations must be complied with in all events. 5. All electrical equipment must have a current electrical certificate tag, that has been issued by a qualified electrician prior to being able to compete. a. Any gear without a current electrical tag will be required to be tested onsite at least 1 hour before your competition is scheduled. b. Cost for testing is $20 (inc GST) per item. c. Already tagged gear will still be checked and must be available prior to competing. d. Any gear that fails the electrical test will not be able to be used. 6. Entry fees must be paid in full at the time of registration for contestant’s place in the competition to be confirmed. Contestants who have not paid will not be eligible to compete. 7. Entries close midnight Thursday 28th June 2018. a. Cancellations on or before Friday 29th June 2018 will be eligible for a refund of the base fee less an administration fee of $25.00 plus GST ($28.75). b. Cancellations after Friday 29th June 2018 are non-refundable. Entry Cost The cost to enter is $60 (incl. GST) per battle category entered. This cost includes day pass into BarberCraft Page | 2

The Battles The Classic The classic cut represents the culture and craft of barbering. It’s that ‘you can tell he has been to a good barber’ look. In this section the judges want to see precision, well executed classic cuts. Be it short back and sides, a businessman’s cut or a flat top competitors must show their skills in these cuts that have been refined over generations of barbers. Time to show your ability to perform fades, line-outs, blending. Beards and moustaches can be included however need to complement the style. Blend and fades move evenly from long to shorter lengths without shadows Dressing of the hair shows off the classic cut and complements the model. Overall look achieved and executed Page | 4
The Pattern How good are you at following a design? In this section you will be given a hair art design and have to recreate this on a model. The judges are wanting to see you can recreate the design in proportion with the head, produce a cut precise replica of the design and clean up the remainder of the haircut to complement the style. Judges will mark according to the following criteria: 45 Minutes is the length of the battle, from tools up to tools down no exceptions. The design will be given to contestants on the day of the Battle. The Creative Barbering is more than meeting the commercial needs of your customers, you have the skills and artistic ability to create much more. In this category the judges want to see how far you can push your creative ability in barbering. Using your own model show us what you have got. Use combinations of hair art, fashion techniques, multi layers there are no limits. You might like to include facial hair into your design. Anything goes, the only stipulation is you completely restyle your model. Judges will mark according to the following criteria: 40 minutes is the length of the battle, from tools up to tools down. The Shave A clean shave by a barber is something every man should experience. This is the barbering trade at its best. For this section you must complete a full shave using systematic stokes. You can choose if you use the single or double shave method but the judges will be checking for a smooth result over the entire beard area. VISIBLE STUBBLE ON FULL FACE REQUIRED AND WILL BE CHECKED PRIOR TO THE START OF THIS SECTION. Judges will mark according to the following criteria: Judges will be on the floor for this section. 30 Minutes is the length of the battle, from tools up to tools down. The Beard Love them or hate them the beard defines the man that wears them. Fashion dictates the size, shape, amount, and length of the modern beard and fashion at the moment says bring on the full beard! The judges for this are looking for a clean balances beard that complements the model and fashion expectation. Judges will mark according to the following criteria: 15 minutes is the length of the battle, from tools up to tools down. New Zealand Barber of the Year This prestigious award is being introduced to BarberCraft for the first time in 2018. The intention of this Award is to find a Barber that can demonstrate a high level of expertise across a wide range of traditional and modern barbering skills. To be eligible for this award, Barbers must: • hold a NZQA qualification in Barbering • or be a current HITO Apprentice. • compete in the following 3 battles: The Classic, The Shave, The Creative The winner will be decided according to the highest total score across all three battles. In the case of a draw, there will be a deciding battle held between the barbers concerned. This will be held immediately. Judges scores from the deciding battle will be final.
