BACKCHAT IN BRIEF Term 2, Week 9 Dear Parents, We now only have 5 days remaining before what will be a well-deserved holiday for everyone. At no time over my almost 30 year teaching career has the school community ever been confronted with the extraordinary circumstances that presented across the last 15 weeks. I thank everyone for their patience, support and commitment to delivering the very best to the students and broader community throughout these challenging times. SCHOOL PHOTOS School photos will take place on Thursday 2 July, in accordance with the recently released guidelines by the department. All students are required to wear full uniform (including tie and Seniors have to wear their blazer) regardless of whether they are purchasing a photo. Please note that long pants are optional, except for Prefects who have to wear long pants. Order forms have been distributed to the students and if you have any questions regarding the purchase of school photos please feel free to contact Mrs Laffer. PARENT AND TEACHER EVENING – TUESDAY 28 JULY (POSTPONED) In accordance with the current Department of Education guidelines we will be postponing this planned Parent Teacher Evening. Year 12 parents who would like their son’s teacher to contact them prior to the end of Term 2, please email the school at asquithboy-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au with the following: • Son’s name: • Teacher(s) to receive feedback from: • Major concern: • Preferred contact: email or mobile (please include email address or phone number) The staff at Asquith Boys High School believe that it is important to offer the opportunity to discuss the progress of students in Year 12 and give feedback for revision over the school holiday period and prior to their HSC Trial Examinations. Information about a possible Parent Teacher Evening for other year groups later in Term 3 will be communicated once the restrictions are eased. YEAR 12 STUDENTS - DR PRUE SALTER STUDY VIDEOS Dr Salter has created a video series to help you plan your study for the holidays and to ensure you prepare effectively for the Trial HSC Examinations. https://www.studyskillshandbook.com.au/sessionvideos/year12/year12part3.php username: drsalter password: videoseries3 The 6 short videos cover: 1. What students should ensure they do before the end of the term? (Use the checklist provided.) 2. Using research about the brain to help plan holiday study time. (Grids and planners for the holidays provided.) 3. Common study mistakes and how to avoid them. 4. Extra memorisation tips. 5. Moving results to the next level. 6. What to do in Term 3 before the examinations. We encourage all Year 12 students to take advantage of this support and Dr Salter’s offer to give feedback to students on their study plans. After the Trials we are hoping to run a face to face session with Dr Salter to help students plan for the HSC, however, if that is unable to go ahead we will provide students with another video series instead to show them how to plan through to their final HSC Examinations.
YEAR 12 UNIFORM From Monday 29 June all Year 12 will be able to wear their jerseys to school. This is largely due to the unprecedented circumstances that have been presented to them over the past term, and their resilience and determination as a year group to make the very best of it. They will be able to wear their jerseys for the remainder of their time at Asquith Boys High School, except on Formal Assemblies, Graduation Assemblies and School Photo Day. CONTACT INFORMATION If you have changed address or contact details at any stage over the first half of this year we would greatly appreciate your new details being forwarded to the school so that our files can be updated and all school communications are received. Also, all attendance communications will now be completed via the parent portal, and we will no longer be using SMS. Students who are arriving late to school or leaving early must do so via the print room or Reception. CHANGES TO CURRENT PROCEDURES Term 2 Week 10 – School Sport Trials will take place on Wednesday 1 July to allow all students to trial for a grade sport in Term 3. A condensed Zone Winter Sports Competition will take place throughout Term 3. Information on this has already been forwarded to all parents this week. From the start of Term 3 - • Term 1 (pre COVID-19) timetabled lessons will resume in Term 3 • Literacy and Numeracy periods on Thursday and Fridays will recommence – which will alter the current finishing times back to 3.05pm. • Year 11 will resume sport with the rest of the students on Wednesdays, and therefore will not be able to sign out early • Year 12 will have the option of signing out at the completion of period 3 on a Wednesday, commit to the winter sporting competition for Term 3, or continue with their major works. STUDENTS WHO ARE UNWELL Again, a reminder and a school request that students with any illness symptoms, no matter how mild, should not be sent to school. We appreciate families supporting the school with the request. If any student presents to school unwell, they will be sent to the front office for parents to collect. They will not be able to remain at school and in sick bay. PARENTS ARE ASKED TO: • Not enter the school grounds for any reason unless an appointment has been made. • Keep students home if they have ANY symptom of being unwell, however mild. • Follow normal absentee procedures, should your son be to unwell to attend school. I again thank the entire school community for their willingness to adapt to the many changes that have and will continue to occur. It has been a great life lesson for our boys to experience how a community can be supportive, caring and assist each other during challenging times.
