Avalon House Avalon House Welcome to the Winter 2021 edition of our newsletter. It’s so good to have more normality back in Avalon House as far as activities go. Please enjoy the review of our activities and events held over the last 3 months, including St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Anzac Day, Mother’s Day, Harmony Day and our big highlight – our 1950s Rock n Roll concert. As always, we like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new residents and families who have joined us over the last 3 months. St Patrick’s Day We enjoyed a wonderful St Patrick’s day celebration at our home on the 17th March where many dressed in green and celebrated in true Irish style. On the day shamrocks were hung from the ceiling and sprung up on our lounge room walls. We enjoyed an afternoon concert with musical entertainment by Dennis and David, who had learnt some Irish songs and had us all singing along. It was a great afternoon and we were delighted to see so many residents having fun.
June 2021 [AVALON HOUSE NEWSLETTER] World Harmony + Happiness Days We had two wonderful theme days in quick succession in March – International Day of Happiness and International Day of Harmony. Both were celebrated with live entertainment by talented performers. International Day of Happiness gave us a lovely opportunity to focus on the importance of happiness and kindness in our lives. We decorated with cheery smiley face decorations to suit the theme. The afternoon concert was attended by a record number of residents who thoroughly enjoyed the upbeat songs and music followed by a special afternoon tea. We all agreed that music is a number one source of happiness. International Harmony Day is a day to acknowledge and celebrate cultural diversity. This year’s theme was “Everyone Belongs” which truly promotes inclusivity and the recognition of all people. Orange is the Harmony Day colour so our decorations were vibrant and uplifting for the residents on a very grey, rainy day. Our morning concert, performed by Yuki and John, was a big hit and the residents were highly engaged by it. Yuki wore her traditional Japanese Kimono and sang a traditional Japanese song for us, followed by songs from other nationalities. The highlight for the residents was the appearance of our staff dressed in traditional costume, Nepalese and Tibetan. This added even more colour, vibrancy and fun to Harmony Day.

June 2021 [AVALON HOUSE NEWSLETTER] Our 1950s theme day on May 25th started well with games of Quoits followed by a Hula hoop demonstration by staff (with mixed success!) as 50s music played in the background. The theme continued at lunch time with special burgers and chips served, as if the residents were in a traditional 50s diner. And then the highlight of the day was our 50s Rock n Roll concert. Well, how can you go wrong with 3 Elvis impersonators in the building??? (one performer and two residents going the extra mile). The scene was wonderfully set with lots of great decorations and many 50s style outfits. What fun we had being entertained by favourite Elvis tunes as some residents and staff hit the dance floor and everyone soaked up the atmosphere. Such a great era which was a joy for us to recreate.
