Mariners’ House of Montreal January- January-March 2020 The Patron News A QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER OF MARINERS’ HOUSE – JANUARY TO MARCH 2020 NEWS & ACTIVITIES By mid-March, despite Transport Canada designating seafarers as essential workers, the shipping companies were no longer permitting crews to leave their vessels and so, for the time being, we closed the centre. Most seafarers must now remain cooped up on ship, even though it is they who are at greatest risk of becoming infected in ports, rather than the other way around. Already 90% of world trade by volume goes by sea and, with virtually no cargo moving by air, shipping could become even more crucial. Seafarers often work nine or ten month contracts but thousands reaching the end of those arrangements are already finding it impossible to repatriate because of borders closing in countries such as India and the Philippines, where many of the world’s roughly 1.5 million seafarers live. About 100,000 seafarers per month are unable to return home or be relieved by new crews because of the pandemic and that has kept many mariners at sea for a year or more, with no end in sight. Assistant Chaplain, David Rozeboom, has never ceased visiting the ships in the Port of Montreal and, every day, fills requests for SIM cards and personal shopping. His movements are usually restricted to the deck of the ship but he is often required to stay on the dock, placing the items into a bucket which is hauled back up on a rope! On February 27, four major maritime companies donated $5,000 each and took to the ice for a friendly hockey tournament at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City. As well as playing for bragging rights, the money was to be divided and donated to support the good causes selected by each team. Fednav, the company which came second and won $5,000, donated their winnings to Mariners’ House, as did CSL, which came in fourth and won $2,500. We are grateful to both these fine companies for their decision to make us the beneficiaries of their generosity. The Patron News 1
