Grace Notes: How to hunt out vintage jewellery
In a new monthly column, BAZAAR Australia’s global content editor sets out to solve your
sartorial woes.

                          Dear Grace,
I want to experiment with secondhand jewellery but have no
idea where to start. Any tips?
THE ROW’S SECOND PARIS Fashion Week show last October was as painfully chic as
one would expect — staged in an intimate baroque saloon in a tucked-away corner
behind The Ritz, where guests were served fresh figs and celery juice. Among the array
of minimalist splendours was an unexpected surprise: a smattering of vintage jewellery
from the prolific French designer Line Vautrin. The brand’s co-creative directors, Mary-
Kate and Ashley Olsen, hunted down these rare pieces from the French vintage dealer

Mon Vintage specifically for the show. This came only months after Rihanna’s instantly
                                                                      SUBSCRIBE SIGN UP
iconic pregnancy announcement shoot, in which she accessorised her Chanel puffer
coat with a Chanel pearl necklace and an oversized Christian Lacroix cross brooch, all
circa 1996. This was certified proof that the jewellery world had finally entered the
“circular economy” chat. Secondhand jewels are officially in fashion, Dear Reader, and
you’re right in wanting to be a part of it.

“The benefits of vintage and antique jewellery are twofold,” explains Josephine Odet,
head of fine jewellery at Omnēque, the website dubbed the Vestiaire of vintage
jewellery. “The first is that the pieces are of incredible quality. These pieces were made
when fast fashion and mass production didn’t exist, using traditional techniques that no
longer exist in the contemporary market. The other benefit is that the pieces have
individual, rare attributes that transcend trends. You’ll wear and love them for life.”
Omnēque’s offering spans everything from ’70s-era Yves Saint Laurent costume
jewellery to Edwardian engagement rings that cost tens of thousands of dollars. What
they have in common is their individuality and “feel good” factor — these pieces have
been made without the carbon footprint and stone mining of modern manufacturing.
It’s a concept that the biggest global names in jewellery are jumping on themselves —
Cartier, Buccellati and Van Cleef & Arpels now offer vintage and jewellery from their
archives, much of it bought back from long-term customers.

Susan Caplan, whose eponymous brand sourced much of the vintage jewellery worn by
Elizabeth Debicki’s Princess Diana in The Crown, has an encyclopedic knowledge of the
past hundred years of fashion jewellery. “The statement necklaces from the ’80s are a
personal favourite, but I also appreciate the classic look of Dior in the ’60s and ’70s,”
she tells me, noting that her all-time favourite piece — a ’90s Versace harness — was
quickly snapped up by a high-profile celebrity.

TRANSCEND TRENDS. You’ll wear and love them for life

Caplan says the key to shopping secondhand jewellery is the “three Cs”: credibility,
craftsmanship and condition.

“Ensure the piece is an original by asking for authentication or checking that the
markings bear the correct signature of the designer,” she suggests. “Then review key

components of the piece, like its weight. Are the claws in good condition? Intricate
                                                                      SUBSCRIBE SIGN UP
detail and meticulous artistry are always distinctive with good quality vintage
jewellery.” Rookie buyers’ biggest mistakes are often purchasing a piece that isn’t
authentic or not noticing a repaired item that could easily break again. Her advice is to
start by doing your research.

“Acquiring vintage jewellery can require a certain amount of historical knowledge and
expertise, which can be learnt through books, visiting antique markets and researching
auction houses,” she says.

Odet says trying on and buying in person is always preferable but not essential. She
recommends asking online buyers for unedited, high-resolution photographs taken in
natural light to see the proper quality of a piece. “Don’t be afraid to ask lots of
questions, but ask the right questions,” she asserts. “Most people experimenting with
secondhand jewellery are asking the same questions they ask about contemporary
jewellery. But you should focus less on the quality of the stones, which were less of a
priority in the past, and more on where and when the piece was made, authentication
papers, and the hallmarks [stamps that verify the gold and design] of the piece.” Her
biggest tip? While secondhand jewellery is competitively priced compared to its
contemporary market counterparts, anything that feels “too cheap” will be a lower price
for a reason. Locally, Love Well is the leading specialist in sourcing vintage and antique
jewellery. (You can shop through its Instagram account or enquire directly if you’re
looking for something in particular.) And if you just want to perv, you can explore Anne
Schofield’s remarkable 108-piece $2 million antique jewellery collection when it goes
on display at the Powerhouse Museum later this year. You know what they say:
(sustainably sourced) diamonds are a girl’s best friend.

San Valentino: cosa regalare?
importante e speciale come l’amore.

anelli cocktail.

lavorazione a pizzo.
