Do you remember what you wore? How did you do your hair? What shoes did you wear? I think for most of us, especially the women in the room, we can all agree that fashion changes over time. For instance, in the 20's, women flaunted their legs in short flapper dresses. In the 40's, men wore big, plaid, and loose suits. In the 60's, men grew their hair out and women had the beehive. The 80's went through a HUGE fashion alteration - big hair, hairspray, tight spandex, bright patterns and miniskirts. Come to Anne's class every month to learn about old & new fashion trends, and then reminisce about your own outfits. History and Traditions of Jeff Kipp February 16th • 1:00pm Multi Purpose Room Mardi Gras Mardi Gras, meaning “Fat Tuesday” in French, has its origins in medieval Europe. What became a legal holiday in Louisiana in 1875 was once a Christian holiday with roots in ancient Rome. Instead of outright abolishing certain pagan traditions, like the wild Roman festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia, religious leaders decided to incorporate them into the new faith. What became known as the Carnival season was a kick-off to Lent, a sort of last hurrah before 40 days of penance sandwiched between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Eventually, the celebration spread from Rome across Europe to the colonies of the New World. Since its early days in New Orleans in the early 18th century, Mardi Gras has grown to colossal proportions and includes several familiar traditions, like bead throwing, mask wearing and coconut painting, that are widely practiced today but whose origins may have been forgotten. Learn all about the origins of Mardi Gras from a New Orleans native and find out why we have certain traditions.
