6th Grade Team Dr. Roberts Honored by Achieves Top Honors the Coatesville Black in County Competition Media Renaissance Middle schoolers from around Chester County recently participated in the County Science Fair, with the Scott sixth grade team taking top honors. The awards ceremony was held on the evening of Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Out of more than 40 team projects submitted at the middle school level for the county fair, Alex Haarstick and Samantha Gomez were selected as one of the top five teams and were awarded an honorable mention. Impressively, they were the only sixth grade team to be recognized at the county level. Their project, "Test Track", explored the effects of surfaces with different coefficients of friction on the speed of toy cars. The data collected from the project identified that surfaces with a lower coefficient of friction enables cars to move faster. We are so proud of the hard work these ladies put in to achieve success at the school, district, and county level! On March 29, 2022, Dr. Eugenia Roberts, Principal of North Brandywine Middle School, was recognized by the Coatesville Black Media Renaissance as a Woman of Excellence for her outstanding, dedicated, and devoted service to the community. Congratulations, Dr. Roberts! Keep an eye on the CBMR YouTube page for their interview with Dr. Roberts!
King’s Highway Engages in Design Challenge Energy, and the conversion of energy to different forms is all around us! Fourth Graders in PLTW/STEM investigated energy sources, forms, and conversion in things like hand warmers, glow sticks and generators. They were presented with the design problem of moving large boxes of donated food from a truck to a food pantry. Students designed, built, and tested systems to help solve this problem. Each model needed to include a form of energy conversion so the boxes could be moved quickly and easily. It looks like we have several future engineers here at KHS! Principal Dr. Miles said, “The collaborative effort of thinking critically to solve a problem is greatly needed and advantageous for our students. I'm so proud that they all seem so excited engaging in such fun and innovative learning.” CAIHS Student Places 1st in Science Fair CAIHS Student, Emily Biedenkapp, earned 1st Place in the 9th Grade Chemistry category at this week’s Delaware Valley Science Fair for her research project, “The Best Recycled Watercolor Paper.” DVSF reports that close to 1,000 students in grades 6 through 12 participate in the Fairs each year, and Coatesville Area School District is so proud to have been represented in this prestigious event. Last week, students at the Intermediate High School began work with Compass Mark, an organization that implements school-based drug and alcohol prevention services in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Chester counties. Students in grades 8 and 9 are engaging in the evidence-based program, CATCH My Breath. This program provides youth with information and the skills to resist peer pressure and media influences to try e-cigarettes and vaping. Our students started their session with a forty- question survey about vaping, followed by a quick pre-test to check their knowledge about vaping. The presentations started with discussion and lecture and soon, the students quickly realized what they ingest when someone vapes and how dangerous it is. The biggest surprise to the students was that vaping materials include formaldehyde and various metals. The next few lessons will be extremely eye- opening to our students. Click the image below to read more information about how to talk with your kids about vaping. This document, along with other resources can be found on Compass Mark’s website.
