Caring - Sharing - Learning Together 20 May 2021 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Developing Strong Alignment Across our School: As I mentioned in Week One’s newsletter, as a whole staff we have been are focusing on the following 3 areas that support and build capability around our wellbeing framework, Positive Behaviour for learning (PBL) and our curriculum enactment. It is an exciting time as we progress with the three areas. We are also continuing to review the Student Code of Conduct which we will present to the P and C early next term. Our playtime routine of playing first and eating second will continue. Students are arriving back to classrooms calmer and ready to learn. We have also received feedback from parents saying that food is being eaten and nothing returning home. Students are also getting more time to play which is a bonus. It is still in early development and we will continue to look at ways to improve. Please keep in mind when ordering Tuckshop that First Break Play Eat has a longer eating time. We are continuing to remind students to eat their cold items (ie yoghurt) during first break. First Break 10.45-11.00 am 11.00-11.15 am Please see table for play and eating times. Second Break 12.50-1.10 pm 1.10-1.20 pm Before School: It has come to attention that students are arriving at school in the morning too early. Students should be arriving after 8:15am. Staff are on duty supervising areas from 8:15am. We are also dealing with a number of poor behaviour choices on a daily basis. I am working closely with staff to come up with a plan to support smooth transitions to class, in the morning. Over the next few weeks we will be trialling different routines. There will be a number of alerts being sent out to families reminding everyone, what we are trialling. Pop it fidget toys: We are seeing an increased number of these around the school. I have asked staff to talk to students about the expectations in and around the school. Students are not to be trading these before or during school time. NAPLAN: We are near the end of NAPLAN. Congratulations to our Students and Teachers. The 2 weeks have run smoothly and I am sure every student has enjoyed their learning. Every week at Mountain Creek State School is about enjoying learning. Mobile phones and Smart watches: General use of mobile phones causes major disruptions to school environments and are therefore prohibited. Any student found using a mobile phone will have the phone confiscated. Parents/caregivers will then be asked to collect the phone from Administration. (It will not be returned to the student). Students are discouraged from bringing mobiles to school, how- ever if they do, they are to be handed in to the administration before school and collected after school. The school takes no responsibility for mobile phones. The general use of Mobile phones and Smart Watches are prohibited for three (3) main reasons: 1. Mobile phones during class time are disruptive to learning. The sending and receiving of text messages and the ringing of mobile phones is detrimental to student learning.
AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ADMINISTRATION RESOURCE CENTRE 2. The use of mobile technology to photograph or video other students or teachers with the intention to harass, intimidate or embarrass, is not only contrary to school policy but is also unlawful in many cases. 3. Mobile phones can transport visual media and movies which may contain materials that should not be viewed at school. Dominic Carter Principal STUDENT BANKING SERVICES NO LONGER AVAILABLE Effective 31 July 2021, school banking programs will no longer be offered in Queensland state schools. School banking services will cease to be offered in our school and all Queensland state schools from 31 July 2021. In line with several other states and territories, the Department of Education’s decision is in response to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) Review of School Banking Programs report in De- cember 2020. Students will be able to maintain their banking relationship directly with their bank. Consumer and financial literacy will continue to be delivered to students as part of the Prep to Year 10 Australian Curriculum, including Mon- eysmart and the BuySmart competition. 2021 TERM 2 DATE CLAIMER Event Date P and C Meeting Thursday 20 May 2021 Online NAPLAN Year 3 and 5 Tuesday 11—Friday 21 May 2021 MCSHS Year 7 Zenith/STEM Information Evening (5.30 pm) Monday 24 May 2021 MCSHS Year 7 Applications close for General Enrolments, Zenith and STEM Friday 28 May 2021 Prep Incursion—Mysterious Materials Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 June 2021 Parent Rep Meeting Wednesday 9 June 2021 Athletics/Sports Day — Upper School (Weather permitting) Parents Welcome Wednesday 9 June 2021 Athletics/Sports Day — Lower School (Weather permitting) Parents Welcome Thursday 10 June 2021 MCSS Trivia Night Friday 10 September 2021 Please note that these dates are accurate at the time of publishing and may change at any time.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS AROUND RESOURCE CENTRE THE SCHOOL NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME 3, 2, 1, Blast Off! It’s time for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vi- brant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Prep to Year 6. The chosen book for this year is “Give me some Space!” written by Philip Bunting. Wet weather thwarted our initial plan to enjoy the story being read at different locations throughout the playground (simultaneously!). We defaulted to Plan B, and classes listened to the story while they were eating their morning tea, or they watched a recording in their classroom of Dr Shannon Walker reading the story from the International Space Sta- tion. We also enjoyed watching footage of a real as- tronaut teaching us about everyday life on the ISS; how astronauts sleep, brush their teeth, wash their hair, and even what they eat. It was very interesting! IT’S GREAT TO SEE THE KINDY KIDS Every Wednesday these gorgeous 3 and 4 year old little ‘Kindy Kids’ from Mountain Creek C and K will put on their bright coloured hats and stroll down from their class- room to check out our library. On their first visit, using listening and their best man- ners, the children listened to the book ‘Space’. We look forward to seeing more of these little cuties next semester when they come to visit us weekly. INVESTIGATING ANGLES IN 4G 4G have had fun investigating angles using spa- ghetti and making their own theme park maps as part of the Maths curriculum. They have explored and included mapping features such as scale, a compass rose, key and labels.
