a message from Rabbi Chizner I’d like to let you know about my experience with a Jewish observance that usually occurs in April. Back when I was a student living in Israel in 1994, I was in a taxi heading towards the outskirts of Jerusalem. The driver of the taxi had the radio on. It was dusk. All of a sudden, in quick succession, the radio began broadcasting a siren sound, the taxi slowed to a stop in the middle of the highway, the driver opened his door, and he got out and stood at solemn attention outside the car…in the middle of the highway! I looked behind me in a panic, thinking that some car might be barreling down the highway into us. Yet, there were no other cars moving. In fact, every other car behind, in front and on the other side of the road had stopped. And, each person from each car stood at silent attention next to his or her car. I hesitantly got out of the taxi and quickly became aware that the siren sound was also blaring in the open air. This couldn’t be an air raid. If it was, we should be driving faster, not standing out like sitting ducks. What was this? A Jewish holiday? Sort of, but not one that I knew of. After a long, surreal minute, the siren died down, the driver got back into the car and so did I. The radio announcer came back on the radio and seemed to take up right where he left off and we began to drive again. “S’licha. Mah kara?!”, “Excuse me. What just happened?!” I asked in a frightened voice. The driver looked at me in the rearview mirror and with a somewhat annoyed glance he said, “Yom Hazikaron.” He didn’t say any more after that. I did not mean to offend him with my question, but I probably did. After all, there I was, an American Jew who supposedly loved Israel but didn’t even know that this day was set aside to remember fallen Israeli men and women. Me, as an American who never served in the military--let alone the IDF--never put my life on the line for another--let alone a fellow Jew hoping to just keep the Jewish homeland safe--had the audacity to express displeasure at this siren experience. I subsequently learned about this day and have done my best ever since to take some solemn time on each Yom Hazikaron. The full name of the day means “Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of the Wars of Israel and Victims of Actions of Terrorism.” Possibly different from the way many Americans commemorate our Memorial Day, every Israeli takes Yom Hazikaron very seriously and solemnly. There is an understanding in Israel that everyone personally knows someone who has died defending Israel or in a terrorist event. On April 13th, 2021, at sunset in Israel, a siren will blare across the country. While this is sort of a Jewish holiday, in truth it is a Holy Day of the modern Jewish people. Here in America we probably won’t hear the horn, but I encourage each of us to think of our Israeli brothers and sisters who protected the Jewish homeland. Rabbi Todd Chizner
temple update from Doug Weigler, President As I write this article in the middle of March, for the April VOICE OF JUDEA, I am sitting in Florida enjoying the warm weather. Rena and I received our second shot of the Pfizer vaccine and decided to leave the snow and go somewhere where we could take a walk, go to the beach, and dine outside. * * * * * The Cantor’s concert was a wonderful evening as well as a very positive fundraiser for Temple. I thank the Cantor and the Committee: Linda Ackerman, Phyllis Wininger and Kathi Kafka for all their hard work to make the evening a great success. * * * * I am most honored to have been selected to be one of the honorees at this year’s Gala along with Lauren Chizner. Shortly you will be receiving the invitation to the Virtual event. I hope you will be most generous with your sponsorships for the benefit of Temple Judea. * * * * * I have just three more months of my Presidency and want to take this opportunity to thank my incredible fellow officers, Board Members and Committee chairs. The past year due to Covid has been a very trying time, but together we were able to weather the storm. The strong support we received form Rabbi, Cantor, Maxine, Lauren and staff were invaluable. * * * * * As per the Rabbi’s article last month, we will be re-dedicating the Holocaust Center later this year. All donations to the temple for the perpetuation of the Irving Roth Holocaust Resource Center are greatly appreciated. FROM MY FAMILY TO YOURS CHAG PESACH SAMEACH
For those who joined us on March 21, you know what a fabulous concert and wonderful evening it was! Cantor Deborah Jacobson created an amazing virtual concert that will not soon be forgotten. The cantor’s voice is always beautiful, and during the concert it was highlighted by the arrangement of music she chose and performed. Her voice always makes our hearts sing... When this committee was formed, it was the first time Cantor Jacobson was going to host a virtual concert at Temple Judea and our first time co-chairing a virtual concert. After living through 12 months of avoiding our families and friends, we were thrilled that technology and creativity enabled us to be together and share this incredible concert with you. Planning a virtual concert requires much coordination and many people working together. With the cantor at the helm of our team, she guided us through many unknowns and was always available to listen and offer help as we worked together to plan this momentous concert. We could never have done it without your creative ideas, determination and--above all else--your talent and beautiful voice. We thank you for your boundless energy, guidance and your confidence in us. Our virtual concert succeeded thanks to the help of so many. Thank you to Rabbi Todd Chizner for joining and being a vital member of our dynamic team, Doug Weigler, President of Temple Judea for believing in the concert, and Lauren Resnikoff, Religious School Educator, for all your help with social media and your IT skills and ideas. To the temple office: Maxine Peresechensky, Executive Director of Temple Judea, Shari Navon and Debbie Berman for your constant help and support; we could not have done any of this without you. To our many temple volunteers: Karen Blum, Nancy Fadem, Paula Groothuis, Lynn Heilbrun, Peter Heilbrun, Barbara Levine, Susan Levinson, Adela Liebgold, and Melanie Wagner, we thank you for the many hours you spent helping to make this concert a success. Without David Martin, the concert could not have been so seamlessly broadcast; your help and knowledge seemed to have no bounds. To Steven Salsberg, who coordinated the concert with the cantor, we thank you for your continued support and generosity. And of course, to the guest artists and musicians who put their heart and souls into this project and shared their talents with us, thank you!!! Finally, to all the congregants who joined us, thank you for your generous donations, support of Cantor Deborah Jacobson and Temple Judea of Manhasset. We hope everyone enjoyed the concert as much as we did, and for those who missed it, we hope you will join us next time. Warmest regards, Linda Ackerman, Kathi Kafka, and Phyllis Wininger Co-Chairs Concert Committee

Publicity Update Temple Judea continues to be undaunted by Covid-19 restraints. Some big Temple events were held in March, all "virtually" of course, and all will be described in articles in the local papers. The Cantor's concert, "Hallelujah---Bima to Broadway".and a virtual tour of the current exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art were some of the outstanding events of the month. The congregants who attended the cantor's concert were treated to an extraordinary feast of wonderful music performed by Cantor Jacobson and many talented musicians. Some of the many photos are attached. A virtual tour of the Nassau County Museum of Art, led by Dr. Charles Reilly, Director of the Museum, was an exciting introduction to the exhibit of art by world-famous women artists. The article and a photo of Dr. Reilly are appearing in local newspapers. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Fadem Chair of Publicity Committee
JTech News from Lauren Resnikoff, Education Director Our Passover Partners project brought together grandparents and great-grandparents of our students, members of Temple Judea, and students in our school program. Over Zoom, we learned about the 4 Questions, the seder plate, and different aspects of the seder. Some highlights included Claude Sherman reading the 4 Questions to us in French AND Spanish and Talia sharing her family's seder traditions from Iran. With our partners, we created and led a Passover seder over Zoom. Seder plate supplies were delivered to those who lived locally. We are grateful to The Jewish Education Project and UJA- Federation for funding for this unique and memorable experience. Lauren Resnikoff Temple Judea is proud to be a PJ Library Partner. PJ Library sends free Jewish children’s books to families across the world every month. We know that something magical happens when parents sit down together to read with their chil- dren. PJ Library shares Jewish stories that can help your family talk together about values and traditions that are important to you. A program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, PJ Library is made possible through part- nerships with philanthropists and local Jewish organizations. Families raising kids from birth through 9 years old with Judaism as part of their lives, are welcome to sign up. Make a Difference through Social Action Committee LASAGNA LOVE--WHAT A REWARDING PROJECT! WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN! On February 9, Temple Judea members cooked and delivered home-made lasagnas, zitis and cookies to the staff working on the Covid floor at St Francis Hospital. The feedback from the hospital proved that the Lasagna Love gesture was very much appreciated. We are planning our next Lasagna Love event for early May. We will be delivering to Our Lady of Fatima in Port Washington for distribution to local families. Please keep an eye out for flyers and/or contact Alicia Munves at 516-627-5998 or Rita Marcus at rmarcus883@aol.com to volunteer. SHARING TABLE --TAKE WHAT YOU NEED, LEAVE WHAT YOU CAN Our ongoing Sharing Table project is slowly but surely gaining momentum. A table is set up in front of the synagogue supplied with non-perishable food (no glass), toiletries and cleaning products. The idea is that our congregants can drop off these items and our neighbors in surrounding communities who are struggling can take what they need. We are reaching out to high school social workers and other community agencies. In addition, we are spreading the word through social media and signage. Please make all donations during temple office hours and call the office (621-8049) when you arrive so they can properly sort your contribution. PACK IT UP FOR HATZILU-PLEASE DONATE DISHWASHING LIQUID! We are working with TANS, a consortium of social action leaders from synagogues on the North Shore, to provide much needed supplies to Hatzilu, an organization that provides support to Jewish people in need in Nassau County. Temple Judea has committed to donating 100 16 oz. bottles of dishwashing liquid (not for the dishwasher), while other synagogues are collecting different household items. Please donate by April 6. CURB YOUR MITZVAH-- SAVE THE DATE! WE'RE VOLUNTEERING ON MAY 16! Curb Your Mitzvah, sponsored by the Sid Jacobsen JCC, is a contact free outdoor drop-off collection. This event at the JCC Annex, 200 Forest Drive, was developed to help our neighbors in need on select Sunday mornings. Temple Judea has volunteered to staff the event on May 16 from 10AM-noon. We will be directing traffic and unloading donations. This is a great opportunity for adults and teenagers. OUR NEXT MEETING--WE CAN USE YOUR HELP...AND YOUR IDEAS!! Our next social action zoom meeting will be Tuesday, April 27 at 11:30AM. Please contact Alicia Munves at brackmanmunves@gmail.com to receive a zoom invitation if you can attend.
Greetings from WRJ Sisterhood Phyllis Wininger, President My Dear Sisters of Temple Judea, Can you believe that Winter is over and Spring is here with warmer weather and longer days? I am becoming a bit more optimistic that we will soon see each other’s beautiful and smiling faces in person and we will be giving each other those long-awaited warm embraces. Sisterhood’s book club will meet via zoom on April 6 at 1pm. Rina Rubin will be leading the discussion on the book “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles. You may also enjoy watching the movie starring Tom Hanks on Amazon Prime Video before we meet. Our book club discussions are always lively and though- provoking. As usual, we invite all Sisterhood and Temple members to join us. I am so sorry, but one more Passover will “pass” and Sisterhood will not have the Women’s Seder and dinner, but I do hope you will be able to share this joyous holiday with your loved ones. For me, this will be the first time Michael, Rob and I will not have to sit six feet away from each while we enjoy our Passover dinner and afterwards we do not have to wear masks; thankfully the three of us are vaccinated. As I look ahead, my wish is before my presidency ends, we will be able to meet and break bread together one last time. I am thinking May or June, but the exact date and location is yet to be determined. On behalf of my Executive Board which includes Melissa Antenberg, Lauren Chizner, Kathi Kafka, Stacey Needleman and me, we wish you a Happy and Healthy Passover. A Zissen Pesach everyone. Yes, I definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel! Much love from my family to yours, Phyllis, Michael and Rob WRJ Sisterhood Book Club This month's Zoom Meeting is open to all temple members and will take place on Tuesday, April 6 at 1:00 PM We will be discussing: News of the World by Paulette Jiles We will be discussing the book and the movie, News of the World, starring Tom Hanks and streaming soon on a TV near you. We thought it would be interesting to compare the two formats of telling the same story. It is suggested to read the book forst so your own imagination can create the scenes and the characters. Then, it's fun to see how a director and top actor envisioned the same story. Please RSVP by email or text to Rina Rubin riparub@verizon.net or 516-286-6139. She will send you a Zoom invitation via EMAIL as the date draws near. If you have any questions or problems, call Rina at the number above for assistance. She looks forward to helping you to join a very vibrant group discussion.
