Thank you all for your attendance and thank you to all those who made it possible. After an amazing breakfast, Mayor Barber welcomed our new citizens to their first Australia Day. A minute's silence was observed to honour those brave volunteers who have given their lives in battling the fires that seem to have engulfed our beautiful country. Professor Don Bursill OAM, one of Australia's leading authorities on water quality and management gave a short talk regarding his passion. His vision for what is possible for Streaky was well received. Celebrations then turned to our own people. The Australia Day Committee decided this year to celebrate all nominees with all being very deserving and their nominations needed to be celebrated. We are very, very proud of the winners so here they are: EVENT OF THE YEAR - Dancing Stars Streaky Bay BUSINESS OF THE YEAR - Streaky Bay Meat Service YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - Stephanie Reddenand CITIZEN OF THE YEAR - Jason Habel Streaky Bay Visitor Centre T (08) 8626 7033 // F (08) 8626 1990 // E info@streakybay.sa.gov.au

Cool weather not a dampener on Family Fish Day! The Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association hosted the Family Fish Day on Sunday 5th January. The event had been scheduled for Saturday 4th however inclement weather resulted in changing to Sunday 5th January. The cool Sunday morning didn’t deter the 134 children that registered. Over 200 people were in attendance with participants coming from as far away as Slovakia, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. All commented on the positive sense of community spirit in Streaky Bay and what a great family event to participate in. The fishing competition was ‘Catch and Release’ and only a couple of Anglers were seen kissing their fish goodbye in Rex Hunt fashion. The range of species caught on the day was a good indication on the health of the seafood in the bay. Crabs, Tommy Ruffs, Trumpeters, Rock Cod and Whiting being the most commonly caught. Everyone was a winner! Largest Catch of the Day - Angler 10 - Conner Habel hooking a 460g Strong Fish and winning $100 for his efforts. Other Prizes Biggest Catch Runner Up - Angler 34 - 450g Rock Cod - $50 Largest Caught of a Species - Went to 18 Anglers, taking home $10 each. Catching 3 different Species - Anglers 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14,16, 25, 26, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 47, 48, 49, 50, 85,86,99,100,102,104, 107, 115, 122, 123 & 126 $5 each. Unluckiest Angler on the Day - Angler 74 - The Phillips family from Taylors Hill Victoria, didn’t catch anything all day, but went home smiling with a rod and reel kindly donated by Donald and Janet Williams. On-the-spot Prizes - 14 Tackle boxes were awarded randomly, much to the delight of the younger anglers. No Angler went home empty handed, all receiving a goodie bag filled with fishing paraphernalia. There was a raffle for a $50 Gift Voucher for food and beverage kindly donated by the Streaky Bay Hotel and Motel. Frequent visitor to Streaky Bay, Tyson Grimm (Adelaide resident - Under 13 years), won the prize and was thrilled to be able to shout his family dinner that night. Tyson and his family participated in the event last year and enjoyed it so much they came back ! The Sausage Sizzle was a big hit and fueled the hungry competitors. The sponsors were: Killas, Streaky Bay Hotel Motel, Shimano, SA Fishing, Neptune Tackle and the Williams Family. President of the Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association stated: “This is a long standing event that encourages participation and highlights the social prosperity within our community. For the participating visitors, they have such a good time that they become our ambassadors, promote the competition and Streaky Bay as a great place to visit. Thanks has to go to our Committee and local members of the Streaky Bay community that helped out on the day. Special thanks to the event Project Manager, Nigel Brace. Nigel spent months talking to suppliers to arrange the goodie bags content. He managed all the logistics, provided the bait and even cooked the BBQ. Nigel’s efforts, together with the generosity of our Sponsors, made the event cost neutral for our Association, which is greatly appreciated. This enables us to keep this as a FREE community event.” Family Fish Day will be back on again next year and is planned for Saturday 9 January 2021, weather permitting! EXTRA LEVEL OF PROTECTION IN PLACE FOR ENDANGERED SEA LIONS The Australian sea lion is one of the rarest seal species in the world, with the entire population estimated at less than 14,000 individuals, and declining on average around four percent per season across their range. Due to their vulnerability to disturbance, colonies are largely restricted to remote, offshore islands, many of which are situated off the coast of the Eyre Peninsula. South Australia is well and truly the stronghold for this species, with 85% of the total population found in our waters. Jones Island (Baird Bay Islands) Conservation Park at the mouth of Baird Bay has recently been declared a prohibited area, in order to restrict disturbance to the breeding cycle of the Australian sea lion colony. It is now illegal to land a boat on, or to embark on the island by foot. The main reason for this is that the area that is accessible to boats and people, is also the same area the sea lions give birth to and raise their pups that when newborn cannot yet even swim. In recent years increased visitor numbers, combined with far reaching social media, has resulted in substantial pressure on the Jones Island colony. From a National Parks and Wildlife Service perspective at the end of the day it’s about appreciation and respect for our unique wildlife and beautiful natural areas. There is no better way to gain an appreciation of our amazing environment than to immerse yourself in it. However, do so in a respectful way that doesn’t harm others that are just doing their thing. When out for a spot of recreational boating people need to be mindful of the Marine Mammal Regulations. The regulations are in place to protect animals from disturbance and humans from being harmed by defensive animals. To help Australian sea lion populations to recover we ask that you admire them from a distance and do not approach the animals; · Vessels must not anchor within 150m of a sea lion · Vessel must not approach within 50m of a sea lion · If a sea lion appears to be sick, stranded or disturbed, vessels must maintain a distance of 150m · Swimmers must not approach closer than 30m of a sea lion. If you want to experience an up close and personal encounter with Australian sea lions, there are accredited tour operators across the Eyre Peninsula who are permitted to take people to swim with the sea lions. For further information regarding Marine Mammal Regulations contact the Streaky Bay National Parks and Wildlife Service office 8626 1108.
