BATTLE OF SENIO RIVER (World War II) During World War II, on the evening of 09 Apr 1945, a company of 1st Battalion, 5th MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY assaulted the East Bank of the Senio River, Italy. Three minutes later another Company was to pass through and assault the West Bank. The Senio River was 15 feet wide, 4-5 feet deep with banks 30-35 feet high. Both banks were honeycombed with an intricate system of German dugouts and defence posts, with a mine belt on the inner face of the East Bank above the dugout entrances. Sepoy Namdeo Jadhav was a Company Runner and when his company crossed the river he was with his Company Commander close behind one of the leading sections. When wading the river and emerging on the West Bank the party came under heavy fire from three German posts on the inner face of the East Bank. The Company Commander and two men were wounded and the rest, with the exception of Sepoy Namdeo Jadhav, were killed. This gallant sepoy immediately carried one of the wounded men through the deep water and up the precipitous slope of the bank through the mine belt to safety. He then made a second trip to bring back the other wounded man. Both times he was under heavy mortar and machine gun fire. He then determined to eliminate the machine gun posts, which had pinned down the companies and to avenge his dead comrades, so crossing the exposed East Bank a third time; he dashed at the nearest enemy post and silenced it with his Tommy Gun. He was however, wounded in the hand and being unable to fire his gun any further, threw it away and resorted to grenades. With these he successively charged and wiped out two more enemy posts, at one time crawling to the top of the bank to replenish this stock of grenades from his comrades on the reverse slope. Having silenced all machine gun fire from the East Bank, he then climbed on to the top of it and in spite of heavy mortar fire, stood in the open shouting the war cry and waving the remainder of the companies across the river. He not only saved the lives of his comrades, but his outstanding gallantry and personal bravery enabled the two companies to hold the river banks firmly and eventually the battalion to secure a deeper bridgehead, which in turn ultimately led to the collapse of German resistance in the area. For his conspicuous bravery and gallant act in the face of the enemy Sepoy Namdeo Jadhav was awarded the Victoria Cross. BATTLE OF JAMALPUR (INDO-PAK WAR 1971) In 1971, the 1st Battalion MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY (JANGI PALTAN) under the dynamic leadership Lt Col KS Brar, VrC, took part in the liberation of Bangladesh where it fought a gallant action at Jamalpur. The battalion was awarded the battle honour of ‘JAMALPUR’ which is celebrated on 11 December every year as ‘JAMALPUR DAY’. The enemy losses due to the action were, killed 234, wounded 23 and captured 61. A large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from the enemy. For the heroic action at Jamalpur the battalion was awarded five VrCs, two SMs and one Mention-in-Despatches. The capture of Jamalpur opened the Jamalpur-Mymensingh-Dacca axis for the capture of Dhaka from the North. 1st MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY became the first battalion to establish linkup with 2 PARA at Tangail leading to the subsequent capture of Dhaka. 2 Baatcheet February 2019

VETERANS SPECIAL “Let not our gratitude sleep when our perils are past” “Better than honour and glory and history’s iron pen, Was the thought of duty done and the love of his fellow-men.” It is rightfully said that a veteran is a seamless extension of the ‘uniformed’ soldier community. Our veterans are our biggest supporters and strongest critics. They are instrumental in preserving the rich moral fibre of the organisation by playing the role of a guardian and a watchdog. The Army acknowledges the need to prepare its soldiers for the inevitable transition to the civil streets. Such preparation is only a natural phenomenon in the Army, where the Army takes ownership of its prospective retirees in ensuring a smooth transition to a dignified life as a veteran. The Army has institutionalised several initiatives to ensure the smooth transition of a soldier to a veteran. These initiatives in the form of organisations like Directorate of Indian Army Veterans, Army Welfare Placement Organisation, Director General of Resettlement and Ex- Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) are formed to meet the aspirations of the soldier. Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV) DIAV was raised on 14 Jan 2016 at Delhi Cantt. It acts as a ‘single point contact’ on all issues concerning welfare of veterans of Indian Army. Highlights of DIAV -2018 • Creation of Post of Colonel Veterans. To provide a single point contact to our veterans and address their grievances across the country a new post of Colonel Veterans was created at all Area and Sub Area HQs. 8 Baatcheet February 2019
