OUR STAFF & PHILOSOPHY We hire positive role models at South Shore YMCA Camp Gordon Clark and that’s why it’s on our shirts. Our counselors are high school & college students, teachers, and adults with experiential learning, camping and recreational backgrounds. Our philosophy is that we must make the most of our opportunity to have a positive influence on the lives of our campers. Everything we do at camp is guided by the firm belief that we are responsible for the children we lead. Every day we teach our core values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, fun and friendship. We live by the motto “Make a friend, make a summer.” At South Shore YMCA Camp Gordon Clark, we seek to provide our campers with a safe and engaging summer experience that builds community and the memories that will last a lifetime. ”The counselors are amazing role models. They make a point to know my children and demonstrate encouragement and positive social interactions. I believe both my kids, but especially my older son who has been going to Y camp for a few years now, has grown to become a kind, considerate person.” - Camp Parent A MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS To those who joined us last summer, thank you for putting your trust in us as you sent your children to South Shore YMCA Camp Gordon Clark. We are proud of the fun, safe camp experience we were able to create for campers last summer, and we are ready to welcome everyone for the summer of 2021. With safety as our priority, we believe that now, more than ever before, children need camp and the experience of being outside, making friends, and building relationships that will last a lifetime. Life is better with camp, and we hope your child will jump in on the fun this summer. We have created a safe and fun environment, completely adapting our camp structure to align with the CDC and State guidelines to ensure the safety of all campers, staff and families. Here, your child will find a sense of connection, develop new skills, and discover outdoor adventures, with the guidance of positive and mature role models. We strive to build a community where campers of all ages, races, and backgrounds feel welcomed and empowered to try new things. Camp has the ability to change people. It boosts confidence and self-esteem, builds social skills, encourages acceptance, and challenges campers to great things. Whether your family is returning to Camp Gordon Clark, or enjoying camp for the first time, we are excited to bring them into our world and give them the best summer they’ve ever had. All camp staff and Inclusion Specialists are trained in YMCA Universal Inclusion Strategies that address Zones of Regulation, Target Green Zone Behaviors, Redirection to Task, Sensory Replacement, Coping Tools, Self-Regulation, and Maladaptive Protocol. It is our goal to provide campers with the modification necessary to improve and encourage communication skills, social and emotional development, cooperative interactions, physical well-being, and friendships. We understand that a camper with a disability does not have to achieve an identical result or level of achievement as a person without disability. Our camp eligibility criteria include a reasonable expectation that all campers can function independently within our standard camp ratios (6 years and under 1:5, 7 years and above 1:10). If a camper is unable to function independently within our ratios, we welcome the added support of outside organizations, Job coaches, Program/ Residential Aids, 1:1 Direct Support Therapists, Applied Behavior Analysis, Peer Mentors, Special Education Teachers, Paraprofessionals, Personal Care Attendants, and Respite Care Providers. All outside organizations must be registered with the Inclusion Director and CORI/SORI are required. The YMCA does not provide 1:1 aide for campers. If it is determined that a camper requires more supports than the established ratios our Inclusion Coordinator will work with the families to explore support options.
