Welcome to our Spring 2019 season Cumbria County Durham Northumberland Support Highlights events in your village hall and help keep We start the new year by welcoming new co-director Kate Lynch. things live and local in your village. Kate previously worked as a freelance Arts Consultant and has been a Highlights promoter in Kirkby Stephen since 2015. New Zealand will be touring the rural roads of Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland to bring their latest shows to 65 ABOUT HIGHLIGHTS village halls. Highlights Rural Touring Scheme works in partnership with a network of more than 65 village halls and community venues Audiences can enjoy a wide ranging programme, from classics, across Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland to bring satire and topical plays to poetry, children’s shows and dance performances from national touring companies into the heart of performances. The music menu is our most varied to date with rural villages. Central to the success of the scheme is the partnership styles ranging from jazz, folk, classical and opera to country, with our amazing local volunteer promoters. Together we offer western swing and world music. We hope you’ll find something to performances of excellent quality and affordable prices organized tempt you. by and for the community. Audiences can make their way just down the road to an intimate and welcoming venue within their own NEWS community and enjoy a great night out on their doorstep. After 21 years, we say goodbye to Highlights’ Co-Director Barbara Slack who retired at the end of 2018. This is the turn of Nova Scotia’s Ryan Cook. Mixing classic country music with modern satire, Ryan has forged a sound between contemporary folk and dyed-in-the-wool country. With nuances of pop and western swing, Ryan’s songbook reminiscences of the early hillbilly and folk pioneers but stays very much in the current landscape. His acoustic live show combines thumb- picking guitar styles, original folk and country ballads and vintage music from the 1940s and 1950s.
