Message from the President of the Korean National Committee of the IEC 1. Message from the President of the Korean National Committee of the IEC The Korean National Committee of the IEC, in conjunction with the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), is delighted to host the 82nd IEC General Meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, under the theme of "smart cities and sustainable societies". We are now experiencing yet another technological revolution and wave of innovation in the fourth industrial revolution, which will not only have a great impact on industries, Namyong HER but also fundamentally transform daily life. Message from the IEC President 2. Message from the IEC President The fourth industrial revolution is blurring the traditional boundaries between the physical, digital and biological worlds. The internet of things, smart cities, AI, smart mobility, additive manufacturing all impact the way we produce, trade and communicate, much like steam power transformed production methods and the way of life of many societies during the first industrial revolution. General information 3. General information About the host The IEC National Committee of the Republic of Korea is represented by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS). Since its establishment in 1883, KATS, which hosts the National Committee of the IEC, plays a key role in national standardization activities, including coordination of the national standards system, establishment of Korean industrial standard (KS), operation of accreditation systems, legal metrology and safety control of electric appliances and industrial products. It also cooperates with international and regional standardization organizations. The Korean National Committee participates actively in the work of 138 technical committees of the IEC and follows the work of an additional 34 technical committees. The 82nd IEC General Meeting is the second GM hosted by the Korean NC. KATS is focusing on boosting national economic growth and being a platform geared towards a knowledge-based society through the development of strategic policies aimed at evolving the relationship between standards and technology, along with the relationship between standards and industry. KATS also seeks to create more convenient and safe environments via standardization. Furthermore, KATS strives to adopt a new paradigm for standardization. Of particular note: it develops and implements a new bottom-up approach aimed at strengthening support for stakeholders from the private sector to participate more actively in the standards development process. And, by reinforcing support for standardization activities for enterprises, KATS makes its best efforts to create a business- friendly environment. 6 7

The brief of side events 6. The brief of side events Welcome to the "IEC city" The Korean NC will create the small, but compact "IEC city" in Hall 1 of Exhibition Centre 1 of BEXCO, in parallel to the 82nd IEC General Meeting. The exhibition space of the electric and electronic companies will be set up in this "city" to present the companies' cutting-edge technologies and standardization activities. Also, "IEC city" will provide the opportunities for experts and the relevant publics to share their insights and experiences through technical seminars and the Global Convention on Standards Human Resources (HR) under the theme of standards education and related human resource development. The awarded papers from the IEC-IEEE-KATS Academic Challenge will also be presented in this convention. The Korean NC confidently expects that the "IEC city" will become the pivotal gathering place of "IEC citizens", who are inspiring knowledge exchangers, open- minded communicators, and creative innovators throughout the 82nd IEC General Meeting. Tips and useful information 11. Tips and useful information Climate and clothing October is the beginning of the autumn season in the Republic of Korea. The average temperature in Busan is around 14 °C (57 °F) to 22 °C (72 °F) in October.
