A Message for You From the Board of Directors W elcome back, Theatre-Goers! You’re going to love our line-up of diverse stage creations from BC, Ontario, Quebec, Iceland, the US and beyond. We have 22 performances geared toward adults and families, with lots of comedy, stories, songs, culture and drama. With the Nelson Overture Concerts Society we’re presenting four outstanding classical music events. . As you take your seat this season you’ll notice some new things. Hats off to our local contractors, theatre staff & volunteers for the comfy re-upholstered seats and spiffy new flooring! As well, we’re installing a hearing loop to ensure our hard of hearing patrons enjoy our shows, and we have a new website that’s mobile friendly, easy to navigate, and makes ticket purchase a breeze! The Capitol Theatre is thriving and our loyal patrons and renters, committed season sponsors, donors, and government funders deserve a big thank you. PrisonerofTehran MOTUS O DANCE THEATRE P risoner of Tehran is a unique collaboration between Marina Nemat and MOTUS O Dance Theatre. This performance is a synthesis of dance, theatre and story telling that deals with social justice on the theme of Oppression and Freedom. It is a multi-disciplinary performance with Marina’s character telling her story in her own words, based on her bestselling book, “Prisoner of Tehran”. Metamorphosis W hat poetry offers to literature, puppetry can bring to the theatre. “Metamorphosis” is a collection of original short stories not told with words, but with the metaphorical grace of Puppets. It depicts the constantly changing nature of our existence and our perception. Nothing remains the way it seems, as it does not matter what we see but how we see it. Muslim Interrupted ALI HASSAN “From the start, it was clear there would be no pandering, and especially no stereotypes (thank god).” – NOW Toronto C omedian Ali Hassan has trouble explaining to his children why their Muslim family doesn’t go to the mosque — and why he eats pork. The nuances between religion and culture are not always easy for many people to understand, let alone for a five year-old. Good thing a helpful lumberjack is on hand when Little Red learns why Grandma’s teeth are so big… Find out why it’s not polite to wolf down your food, in DuffleBag’s fun-filled version of the famous fairy tale! sunday feb.24, 4pM A Birdy Told Me So Kellie haines Ventriloquist E ight year old Kellie doesn’t feel like she fits in at school until she receives a birthday gift that talks on its own! Kellie meets Magrau, a chatty confident bird puppet who has a flair for singing, dancing and making people laugh. This show blends storytelling with ventriloquism, puppetry and singing. Family Series sunday Mar. 10, 4pM Peter and the Wolf WorlDs of PuPPets T he Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev created the story and the music “Peter and the wolf” in the year 1936 to familiarize young people with the instruments of the symphony orchestra. Our production stays true to the original story and the music leads the show on. Each and every character represents an instrument of the orchestra. sunday apr 7, 4pM 26 Letter Dance bouge De la A n interactive, multidisciplinary alphabet primer, the 26 Letter Dance is a journey into the world of letters and words. Cheng2Duo , Piano & Cello Wednesday January 30, 2019 7:30pm B rother and sister duo, Silvie Cheng, piano and Bryan Cheng, cello have been lauded for their refreshing approach to making classical music accessible, with a rare balance of infectious joy and enthusiasm. Their program “Romantic Impressions” features Debussy, Poulenc, Schumann and Brahms. They debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2011 and have toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, China and South Korea. Honours include: Bryon,the 2017 Canada Council for the Arts, Michael Measures Prize. Silvie, the Roy M. Everton has 20 years experience with the Vancouver Symphony. Doucette has played with the Calgary Philharmonic and Setiawan with the Vancouver Symphony. All are currently with the Okanagan Symphony. The Trio highlights the rich repertoire popularized by French composers of the early 20th century. The unique sound of the three instruments blending together creates a delightful timber. * Admission is free for students aged 18 and under. Fireworks Community Choir Peace and Remembrance P articipate and get inspired by the largest choir experiencing in Nelson.
