Jo Strømgren Kompani
The Hospital
Multi-disciplinary

20-25 August at 7:20 pm
Venue 22 - Dance Base - Studio 1

Work Description

Forgotten people in forgotten places and the imaginary stories
related to such possible misery has been a major topic throughout
the Jo Strømgren Kompani repertory. In The Hospital the misery
is possible more miserable than ever. A provincial clinic in a not
so remote country suffers from lack of patients. Actually there are
none. But three nurses stay put, hoping for the ultimate patient
to arrive and once more give meaning to pain relief and caring
comfort. The Hospital is the first in the Jo Strømgren Kompani
repertory to include only female performers. As with previous
productions, one of the aims is to explore dancetheatre forms
with actors not trained in dance, the continuous exploration of
nonsense languages is this time represented by a linguistic alias
of icelandic, a language which resembles the ancient mother
tongue of all Scandinavians. The intention of verbal abstraction
is the same as with abstract movement – creating a wider range
of associative interpretations. Everything is serious, everything is
nonsense.

Bio

Jo Strømgren Kompani was founded in 1998 and has from its base
in Oslo, Norway, grown to become one of the most established
independent groups in Scandinavia. The company presents 100-
200 shows in 10-20 countries each year. The touring list covers
almost 60 countries so far, frequented by a repertory of 34 stage
productions and 3 movie productions. The company operates
through widespread networks and performs in both large national
theatres and small alternative venues. The style is characterised
by a mix of dance and theatre, with puppet theatre, nonsensical
language, film and live music often added. Jo Strømgren also has
a successful career as a freelance choreographer, theatre director
and playwright.

Bric à Brac Theatre
Mustard Doesn’t Go with Girls
Theatre, Children

31 July, 1–12 and 14-23 August at 11:30 am
Venue 33 - Pleasance Courtyard - Upstairs

Work Description

Mustard Doesn’t Go With Girls - a feminist, inclusive musical for
children - is the latest production from Bric à Brac Theatre. Perfect
for ages 5 and up, the piece follows a young girl with a passion
for science as she goes up against a society which believes girls
should only be seen, never heard. When the children of Bow-on-
Tie start mysteriously disappearing, Abigail decides to investigate
further. She embarks on a music-filled adventure to uncover
the town’s secrets, topple the cabinet of treacherous animals in
charge and prove that girls are made of more than just sugar and
spice. The production presents themes of feminism, female leaders
and women in science to a young audience. It is an inclusive,
original story for all genders, celebrating what it means to follow
your dreams in the face of adversity. The show was inspired
by the success of books such as Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls,
which has sold over one million copies worldwide and has been
translated into 47 languages. Mustard Doesn’t Go With Girls is a
brand new story that celebrates challenging gender stereotypes
by placing a 7-year old girl against a crooked female (reptilian)
mayor who has a taste for tradition. Using an original score, slick
movement and strong characters, this production seeks to poke
fun at fairy tales from the past whilst creating new storylines for
the young generation of today.

The Sacrifice
Theatre

15 – 24 August at 8 pm
Venue - Opium

Work Description

Prepare for the most epic spectacle you will ever experience.
The sword shall be drawn. Blood shall be spilt. The ritual
shall commence. They are waiting for you.

The Sacrifice is a 50 minute comedy show about two idiots
and their chaotically charming attempt to impress and
inspire the audience with their ability to carry out epic rit-
ualistic sacrifices and ceremonies. Created and performed
by Norwegian clown duo, Steffen Hånes and Sigmund
Fosli Lillefjære, the show is a hilarious mess of clown and
absurd comedy. The Gaulier-trained idiots fail repeatedly
in their task - they make mistakes, they argue, they cannot
get it together - and we see that their beautiful idiocy is
far more entertaining than the serious and sacred ceremo-
nies they are attempting to impress us with. The show
involves audience interaction, a vampire, a viking, blood,
swords and silliness. Directed by Izzy Stott.

Bio

A graduate of École Philippe Gaulier in France, Steffen
Hånes is a Norwegian performer, clown teacher and
director based in the UK. Steffen has toured his original
comedy shows in LA, Norway, Denmark, U.K and Korea.

Sigmund Fosli Lillefjære is a Gaulier-trained Norwegian actor
and performance maker. Coming from a background of
tantra, dance, and butoh, Sigmund now focuses on clown,
and creates ensemble shows in Oslo.
