APA Michael Shannon Research Award Details: This award will be granted to the best abstract in the areas of pharmacology/toxicology, drug reactions/events, substance use, environmental health, disaster preparedness/response, and emergency medicine. Trainees and junior faculty are especially encouraged to apply for this prestigious award. This research award is in memory of the life achievements of Michael Shannon, MD, MPH, (1953 –2009). Dr. Shannon was a professor at Harvard Medical School. He was the first African American to be named a full professor of Pediatrics at the institution (2004). Dr. Shannon was also the first African American to serve as a division chief at Children's Hospital Boston and served as chief of both the emergency medicine and clinical pharmacology departments. He was considered the preeminent pediatric toxicologist in the world. He was a prolific writer, publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in major scientific journals. He was lead editor of one of the authoritative texts of medical toxicology, Haddad and Winchester’s Clinical Management of Poisoning and Drug Overdose, 4th Edition, published in 2007. He was also Medical Editor-in-Chief of ToxED, and Board Co-Chair of that publication. APA Student Research Award Details: The Academic Pediatric Association annually honors students engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to recognize research excellence by a student in the fields of general pediatrics (including public health, epidemiology, health policy, and underserved populations), health services research, education, adolescent medicine, child abuse, developmental/behavioral pediatrics, emergency medicine, and hospitalist medicine. The goal is to encourage pediatric trainees to pursue careers in academic general pediatrics. Awardees will be selected based on the quality of their submitted PAS abstract. MD/PhD and PhD Students Eligibility Criteria: Student must submit and present abstract prior to the student receiving his/her MD/PhD or PhD degree Medical Students Eligibility Criteria: Student must submit and present abstract prior to the student receiving his/her MD degree. APA Joel Alpert Award Details: The Joel Alpert Award was established in 2016 by the Academic Pediatric Association to honor research that helps to improve the health of underserved children through service, education or advocacy. The Award is supported by donations from Joel's many colleagues and friends. Applicant must be a current APA member to be considered for this award. APA Ludwig-Seidel Award Details: This award recognizes the abstract that represents the best research project in pediatric emergency medicine in which a PEM fellow is a lead author. The application involves the following: Check the appropriate box in the PAS abstract submission program and complete the online application form. The nominee must be the first author of the abstract. Upload a 500-1,000-word expanded version of the abstract. The overview should include the project’s rationale, method of implementation, and evaluation. There should be some discussion of the project’s importance and potential impact. During the judging process strong emphasis is placed on the extent to which the process is innovative, and the degree to which there is an objective evaluation component. Helfer Award for Innovation in Pediatric Education Details: This award will be granted to the best medical education abstract by a non-trainee APA member which meets the criteria for creativity/innovation and impact on pediatric educational practice. Either the first or last author must be a current member of the APA to be considered for this award. The abstract also must be submitted to the topic area “Medical Education.” If the first author is a trainee, please see the APA Trainee Award for Innovation in Pediatric Medical Education. APA Trainee Award for Innovation in Pediatric Medical Education Details: This award will be granted to the best medical education abstract by a trainee (high school/college student, medical student, resident, fellow, post-doctoral student/fellow or allied health trainee) which meets the criteria for creativity/innovation and impact on pediatric educational practice. The first author must be a trainee to be considered for this award. At least ONE author on the abstract (trainee or faculty) must be a current member of the APA. The abstract also must be submitted to the topic area “Medical Education.” If the first author is not a trainee, please see the APA Ray E. Helfer Award for Innovation in Pediatric Medical Education. SPR House Officer Research Awards Details: The Society for Pediatric Research annually honors house officers engaged in pediatric research. These awards are designed to encourage pediatricians in training to pursue careers in academic pediatrics. Winning candidates are selected based on the quality of the work presented in the abstract. Eligibility Criteria: House Officer must submit and present the abstract prior to the completion of residency. ASPN Fellow Research Presentation Award Details: Fellows who are first author on an accepted abstract, currently enrolled in an ACGME- approved pediatric nephrology training program are eligible to receive a $100 honorarium. ASPN Trainee Research Awards Details: Two ASPN Trainee Research Awards will be given. Medical students, residents, or fellows who are pursuing combined clinical and research training towards becoming a pediatric nephrologist are eligible. One award will recognize the best abstract on patient-oriented research and one the best basic science abstract, based on the quality of the work. The awards will consist of an honorarium and complimentary registration. Candidates for the Trainee Research Award will be solicited during the Call for Abstracts. Award cannot be received in two consecutive years. Candidates must fulfill the following conditions: Must be a medical student, resident, or fellow pursuing combined clinical and research training toward becoming a pediatric nephrologist. First authorship on an abstract submitted to the ASPN/PAS Annual Meeting in the field of pediatric nephrology that is accepted for presentation. Awardees will be expected to present their abstract at one of the sessions at the annual ASPN/PAS meeting. Presentation of the awards will take place at the ASPN Awards Luncheon. Application Process: Medical students, residents, and fellows must provide written confirmation of their educational/training status.
