AMHS Bulletin October 28th, 2022 Greetings AMHS Families, This past week was an exciting week at AMHS with a number of our sports teams playing their final games before heading into playoffs; additionally, our Arts Department is also busy preparing for our greatly anticipated theatre performance, Shrek the Musical, which will be showing on December 7th, 8th and 9th at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. For our upcoming week, on Monday, STUCO will be running a Halloween Spirit Day, where we will have a modified school schedule (listed later on in the bulletin). As a friendly reminder, all student costumes should be responsible and appropriate for school - no replica weapons are allowed to be a part of the costume. On Wednesday, November 2nd, Take Your Kids to Work Day will also be running, where many of our future students, from our elementary schools, will be visiting. Finally, as a friendly reminder, if your child is in grade 10 and would like to attend the Royal Winter Fair trip On November the 8th, spots are still available on Schoolcash Online. Additionally, we also secured Raptors 905 tickets for a school trip on December 5th for our grade 11 students. Details will follow shortly, but this trip will also be accessible on Schoolcash Online for grade 11 students. Have a great weekend AMHS community! Greetings families, as per our previous communications regarding Take Your Kids to Work Day on Wednesday, November 2nd, if you didn’t fill out the required Google Form for this day, we are assuming that your child will be staying at home to explore child exploration activities or will be participating in a virtual or in-person job shadowing experience on this day. Our grade 9 teachers will be supervising a scheduled grade 8 visit on this day at AMHS. Thank you. 2022-2023 Secondary School Graduation Requirements Community Service Hours The community involvement graduation requirement of 40 hours is restored for students graduating in the 2022-23 school year and beyond. For the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, the ministry provided flexible ways for students to obtain community involvement hours. At the principal’s discretion, students could earn hours during the time allotted for the instructional program on a school day, and through duties normally performed in the home. This can include helping an elderly relative with an errand or a sibling with homework. Additionally, students could count a maximum of 10 hours from paid employment for students aged 14 years and older. These flexible measures will continue to be available for the 2022-23 school year for all students. Literacy Requirement The literacy graduation requirement has been restored beginning with students graduating in the 2022–2023 school year. Students graduating in 2022–2023 are required to meet the literacy graduation requirement. Students in Grades 10 and 11 and non-graduating students, including those who are learning remotely, are required to work towards the literacy graduation requirement, through participating in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC). To provide maximum flexibility for students to acquire the literacy graduation requirement, particularly for students enrolled in remote learning, students can be enrolled in the OSSLC without having attempted the OSSLT in 2022-23. Assessment Policy As of the 2022-23 school year, district school boards will resume following the policy on final evaluations outlined in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting in Ontario Schools. For Grades 9 to 12, a final grade (percentage mark) is recorded for every course. Final grades will be determined as follows: ● Seventy per cent of the grade will be based on evaluation conducted throughout the course. This portion of the grade should reflect the student’s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration should be given to more recent evidence of achievement. ● Thirty percent of the grade will be based on a final evaluation administered at or towards the end of the course. This evaluation will be based on evidence from one or a combination of the following: an examination, a performance, an essay, and/or another method of evaluation suitable to the course content. The final evaluation allows the student an opportunity to demonstrate comprehensive achievement of the overall expectations for the course (Growing Success, p.41).
