An Old Tradition Explodes Again at Quaker Football Games A group of Salem alumni known as the Cannoneers have brought back the tradition of firing a cannon in celebration of touchdowns at Salem High School football games. In the early 1960s, a Civil War infantry reenactment group called the Salem Grays fired the cannon that could be heard throughout Salem when a touchdown was scored in what was formerly known as Reilly Stadium. After the Salem Grays short stint, a group called the 19th Infantry took over firing the cannon and kept up the tradition for the next 24 years. In 1986, the cannon shots were silenced as the aging men from the group could find no one to carry on the tradition.
