From The Director 3 Kirk Hallman Photo by Frederic Reinecke Have you tired of Zoom meetings, scrolling through social media or endlessly staring at computer screens? Put down the devices and refresh in our Galleries. The quiet contemplative time you can have with a great painting is guaranteed to recharge, calm and reset your mind. It will get your creativity flowing. It will reawaken the parts of your brain that have been worn down during this past year. It’s soothing meditation without having to try! This winter there will be plenty to recharge with at the Muskegon Museum of Art starting with The Walker Legacy: Defining the Museum, which showcases 80 years of gifts from the Walker family that have helped make this museum what it is today. Our major winter exhibition, The Art of the People: Contemporary Anishinaabe Artists, is organized in partnership with Grand Valley State University Art Gallery and brings a fresh and exciting take on Native American artists in Michigan. Companion shows include Jim Denomie’s thought provoking work and Levi Rickert’s photography of Standing Rock. We round out the winter season with a stunning Ansel Adams show from our permanent collection and a celebration of Friends of Art’s 100th anniversary. If after all this you still feel the pull of social media, make sure you follow the MMA’s. We provide a lot of interesting and artful content. These exhibitions and much more are detailed here in your Journal. Thank you for your support! —Kirk Hallman, Executive Director

The Walker Family Legacy through Defining the Museum February 7, 2021 Alcoa Foundation Gallery In the 1940s, L.C. and Margaret Walker began to purchase significant prints for the Muskegon Museum 7 of Art, including those by Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer, EXHIBITIONS and Francisco Goya. Today, the Walker Print Collection is a defining facet of our museum and boasts numerous rare, highly prized etchings and engravings. The Walker gifts also include paintings by Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard. Indeed, the Walker gifts have come to define the MMA and its internationally recognized collection. This exhibition presents highlights from the Walker family gifts, calling attention to their magnificent legacy. Louis Carlisle Walker was a prominent business leader and philanthropist as well as a leader of the MMA for a number of years. Walker and Arch Wilkinson Shaw were the founding partners of the Shaw Walker Furniture Company, an iconic West Michigan firm. After L.C. Walker’s death in 1963, Shaw Walker took over the family business and continued, with his wife Betty, to support the community and the Muskegon Museum of Art. Shaw Walker passed away in 2009. Together with her late husband, Dr. Osbie Herald, Anita had a vision for the MMA to have a great collection of African American art. This idea may seem mainstream now, but it was certainly not the case in the 1990s. Their vision, dedication, and funding paved the way to a wonderful collection of African American artwork that is on view in our galleries on a daily basis—including works by Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, John W. Wilson, and Palmer Cole Hayden to name a few. Dr. Herald reminded us that our collection is for our community and that the reflection of our community in the artwork brings voices, ideas, and histories together to inspire learning and celebrate diversity.
