Brendan, John, and Mary, bolstered by a passionate team of volunteers, have made many Stewarding Open Space, Forever improvements to WLT preserves throughout the By the Numbers region over the last twelve months. Photo by WLT Advisory Board Member Mike Surdej Every year, our stewardship team visits each of the 30 preserves we own and manage. This requires a lot of planning, organization, and field work, but with support from donors like you, our stewards are up to the task. It’s easy to romanticize walking around beautiful properties all day, but in reality, it can be hard work. “Some may shy away from a job that’ll have you waist deep in bogs, exposed to poison ivy, and trudging through mud, but we love it,” says Brendan Murphy, Director of Stewardship. Land Steward Mary Walsh and Preserve Manager John Zeiger agree, “We’ve ripped our jackets and pants and braved the frigid cold to protect open space, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” Through rain, sunshine, sleet, and snow, we ensure the trails you love are kept clean and clear, local wildlife have a place to call home and the natural beauty of special places in our region will be safe – forever. STEW ON THIS: Stewardship Takes Cues from Nature Brendan and his team work year-round to care for WLT’s preserves which include 15 miles of trails. This year they focused on trails at two popular preserves: Hunter Today to Plan for Wet and Wild Weather in the Future Brook Preserve in Yorktown and Otter Creek Preserve in Mamaroneck.
