Toll a Balla is a 3-bedroomed cottage set back from the main street in Tobermory with views
over the harbour. Completely re-furbished to bring out its original features, this cottage by
the sea, has exposed stone walls with original fireplaces. Quirky artwork and an eclectic
library means that this little house offers more than a bland holiday apartment.
There is plenty to do - Whale and dolphin watching, wildlife tours to see nesting sea eagles.
There are otters in the bay and the famous ginger Tobermory cat can often be seen in our
garden - escaping from his fans. Bikes can be hired from Browns the ironmongers. There is
much to see of historical interest - get your bearings from the local museum about 100
yards away along the Main Street. Within walking distance there is a distillery, a chocolate
factory, an ice-cream shop, a bakery and a cheese farm - what more does anyone need.
Accommodations consists of two double bedrooms and a single bedroom. There are two
bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. The living room is fitted with a wood-burning
stove.

Item 8. Camus Nan Geall 2021 Archaeological Field School
Subject to legality during the COVID Restrictions
                                  Date to be confirmed

The Field School will be exploring the abandoned settlement of Camus Nan Geall, on the
Ardnamurchan Peninsula the most westerly point of the mainland. The site contains a unique
collection of prehistoric and Early Medieval remains within the picturesque bay. The
settlement was inhabited until the 19th Century before being formally cleared, with many
villagers leaving Scotland for North America.
The bay has been occupied for at least 5,000 years, since Neolithic times with the construction
of the chambered cairn and later the Bronze Age standing stone by Cladh Chiarain, the
Campbell graveyard. The standing stone was later engraved with images including a Christian
cross and, above it, what may be a dog. These carvings possibly date to the time of the coming
of St Columba, after he began his west coast journeys in 563AD and founded the abbey at
Iona.
This field school aims to provide participants with a hands-on experience of working on an
important archaeological survey and excavation research project. Working with volunteers,
professionals and experts from the local Heritage Society all participants will learn how to
excavate to a professional archaeological standard, record archaeological remains through
field survey, record graveyards, understand environmental processes and learn how to
manage, conserve and promote historic sites for the future. During the Field School there will
be scheduled day off, where you will have the opportunity to take a trip to the beautiful Isle
of Mull with a chance to shop in and explore the charming town of Tobermory.
Accommodation is not provided but can be included for extra. Transport to and from
Ardnamurchan is not provided, but pickups will be provided from Kilchoan, which is well
served by public transport.
Bid for one place on the 2-Week Field School without accommodation – value £595

                                  Bidding starts at £300
