The Department works to sustain the City’s social service infrastructure which promotes a healthy and safe environment for all residents. The Department also directly offers services to residents throughout their life course from infants to elders. Services offered to families are designed to help them become or remain self-sufficient. The Ideal Candidate The Human Services Department is seeking an experienced Chef/Food Service Manager who is highly skilled at managing volunteers, planning and preparing delicious, economic meals for a diverse group of seniors. The Chef/Food Service Manager will have knowledge of proper methods of food preparation and volume food purchasing through wholesale and/or government food commodity programs; food nutritional values and proper dietary combinations; care of kitchen equipment; and occupational hazards and safety precautions. The successful candidate must also have the ability to follow recipes for food preparation in large quantities and plan and organize menus while staying within budget; maintain proper inventory records of supplies; prepare required quantities with minimum waste; and work cooperatively with the Senior Center staff and management while working in a diverse environment. Additionally, the selected candidate should demonstrate strong customer service skills and have experience working with older adults. Graduation from a culinary school and possession of a ServSafe Certification is highly desirable.
The Position & Responsibilities Under direction of the Senior Center Manager, the Chef/Food Service Manager will manage a meal program and budget, including menu planning, purchasing food, preparing quantity meals, supervising kitchen employees and volunteers and maintaining a clean and orderly kitchen. The selected candidate will be responsible for properly cooked, economical, and wholesome, well balanced meals in the Senior Center and for the assignment of work, supervision and evaluation of paid and volunteer food service workers. The regular work schedule for this position is weekdays, Monday through Friday. Examples of job duties include: • Plans nutritious menus in large quantities within budgetary constraints, with consideration for the dietary needs of older adults and the demographics of South Fremont. • Estimates requirements and completes requisitions for food and supplies. • Prepares, cooks and serves a wide variety of meals for large quantity food service. • Maintains proper standards for temperature and storage of food. • Directs and assists in cleaning the kitchen and equipment after each meal while maintaining standards of safety and sanitation. • Assures that all of the kitchen equipment is kept clean, sanitary and in proper working condition. • Supervises, instructs and directs employees and volunteers; ensuring standards of safety and sanitation are maintained in the kitchen area. • Manages a budget. • Keeps detailed records and prepares reports as required. • Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential duties of the job would be qualifying. A typical way to accomplish this includes: Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience: • Two (2) years experience as a cook, preparing all elements of full course meals, in a facility which prepares at least 50 full course servings per meal. • At least six (6) months of the above experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. State approved, full time vocational school course work in quantity food preparation, equipment sanitation and safety, may be substituted for up to six (6) months of the above two year experience requirement. Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: • Possession of a Class C California driver’s license. • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pound boxes or bags.
