ADULT CONTINUING EDUCATION (ACE) READ THIS FOR REGISTRATION PROCEDURE 1. Complete a separate registration form per person for each selection (class or trip). Signature, date, phone number and e-mail address must be included. See page 19 for forms. Additional forms may be downloaded from the website. 2. Enclose a separate check and/or money order (for each class and/or trip) made payable to “Smithtown Central School District” or “SCSD.” Fees are noted with each listing. 3. Mail all registrations to: Smithtown Adult Continuing Education PO Box 906 Smithtown, NY 11787-0906 REMINDERS Mail-in registrations only. Register early as classes fill quickly. Registrants must be 18 or older and out of high school. The Continuing Education Program does not mail confirmations. Unless contacted, assume you have been enrolled and attend the first session. Checks take 6-8 weeks to be processed. No cash payments. Returned checks incur a $17 service charge. No refunds. Please plan carefully. Senior Citizen fee requires proof of age (60+). Enclose a copy of driver’s license or Gold Card. Only registered students may attend class. No guests, observers, or children. Please do not arrive to class more than 15 minutes prior to start time. SCSD is a smoke-free, alcohol-free and drug-free environment. Out-of-District Fee applies to those not residing within the Smithtown Central School District (SCSD). ABE INFORMATION FREE NYS adult literacy classes available for adults 21 and over. Smithtown residency NOT required. In-person registration and testing is mandated for all literacy students. Open enrollment from September through June according to available open classes. Ongoing registration Monday to Thursday at 9 AM or 7 PM according to available open classes. Call 631-382-2181 for further information. Adult Basic Education Staff Instructors are New York State certified teachers and/or counselors. COURSE OFFERINGS High School Equivalency: Classes prepare students to take the TASC™ (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) for a High School Equivalency diploma and to determine College and Career Readiness. The exam is administered at various sites throughout Long Island, NOT at Smithtown School District. The Adult Basic Education office processes applications for those enrolled in our program. The New York State Board of Regents requires NO FEE for this computer-based Common Core-aligned exam. Adult Basic Education: Classes are for adults who want to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills. Students are evaluated and placed in an individual program in order to excel and advance to TASC™ Prep. Adults returning to the workplace or entering training or post-secondary education after a lapse of time may find this class an important refresher. Classes are offered in a relaxed atmosphere with emphasis on individual needs via differentiated instruction. English as a Second Language: Free English as a Second Language provides the student with the skills needed to function in an English speaking country regardless of native origin. Focus is on listening, speaking, reading and writing, with advanced audio equipment and computers to supplement instruction. Five levels, from Basic to Advanced are offered. A student may choose morning, afternoon, or evening classes. Crossroads Café, an advanced video program introduced by New York State Department of Education, and Equipped for the Future (EFF) curriculum are two of many initiatives used for instruction in our classes. Inglés Como Segundo Idioma: Las clases gratis de inglés como segundo idioma provéen a los estudiantes de cualquier nacionalidad, habilidades para desenvolverse en un país en el cual se habla inglés. Citizenship: Prepare for the new United States Citizenship exam! Information presented guides you in your efforts to file for citizenship. Cover the basics every candidate for citizenship should know for true understanding of our political system: The Constitution, American history, and principles of the U.S. Government. WORKFORCE PREPARATION Designing Instruction for Career Pathways and Learning to Achieve: These curriculum models prepare ESL, ABE, and HSE students for employment as well as how to function more successfully in society, incorporating critical thinking skills for problem-solving and decision-making. Resumé writing, job interview techniques, and computers are used as supplementary program tools to promote workplace, family, financial, health, and digital literacy. Computer-Assisted Instruction and Smart Board Technology: Students enrolled in the program become familiar with using digital media and practice the Reading, Math, and ESL competencies learned in class. Computer programs on life skills and vocational preparation focus on academic and tiered vocabulary and skills required for particular jobs and careers. Learner Web is available to all students. Workshops: College and Career Readiness, Research Skills, Resume Writing, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy are available to enrolled students. 17
