IFSO-APC 2019 | March 21-23, 2019 | Guangzhou, China ABOUT GUANGZHOU Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and the capital city of Guangdong Province located along the southern coastline of China. It has access to the South China Sea via the Pearl river which runs through the city. It lies in close proximity to Hong Kong which is a short train ride away. Guangzhou’s architecture is a mixture of colonial influences and modern high rise towers. The walks beside the Pearl river are par- ticularly attractive and the city has a number of historic parks which make it quite green and add to the sense of openness of the city. Guangzhou is a famous historical city that continues to absorb and integrate the Chinese and foreign cul- tures over 2000 years, reputed as City of Flowers and Thousand-year-old Commercial City. It embraces Cantonese culture and is a perfect blend of modernity and history thanks to its unique natural environment and favorable geographical location. Welcome to Guangzhou !! A charming city Climate Guangzhou weather is generally warm and humid all year round. The average temperature in March var- ies from 16 to 23 degrees Celsius, and it seldom rains. Currency The Chinese Yuan (also known as Renminbi, RMB for short) is the official and legal currency in Guang- zhou. Use of foreign currencies is generally not allowed. China is still very much a cash culture so don’t expect to rely on your credit cards, except in upscale shops, hotels, and restaurants. Whenever possible, use ATMs operated by the largest banks that you can find: Citibank, Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Agriculture Bank of China, and Chi- na Merchants Bank. Electricity Electricity in China is 220 Volts at 50Hz AC. Power outlets in China almost always have two types of sockets. The first is the American and Japanese-style socket with two flat, parallel blades. American and Japanese-style plugs will fit in these sockets. Insurance Delegates are recommended to obtain travel insurance (medical, personal accident and luggage) in their home country prior to departure. Safety Generally, Guangzhou is a safe city, especially compared to other cities of similar size. However, please be aware of pickpocketing, credit card fraud, and various other petty crimes that happen in any city in the world. Tourists are often seen as easy targets. Should you have any issue you can reach the police by calling 110. In case of urgent matters you can call 120 for ambulance service and 119 for fire stations. Shopping Guangzhou is known for its huge markets and thousands of shops where inexpensive electronics, cloth- ing, computers, and thousands of other products are for sale. Smoking Smoking is prohibited in many public places in Guangzhou. Please look for any possible non-smoking signs before lighting a cigarette. 12
IFSO-APC 2019 | March 21-23, 2019 | Guangzhou, China Water Drinking tap water in Guangzhou is not recommended. Bottled water can be bought anywhere, and is relatively cheap.
