Click here to subscribe and be sure to get your free issue each month from Chester County Department of MH/IDD A Spotlight on Teens April 6 - 12 is Teen Health Week. The observance began in Philadelphia and has become a national health initiative to raise awareness of health issues, including mental health, facing teens around the globe. Coordinated by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Teen Health Week (@teenhealthweek) will kick off with the Gauntlet, a free public event hosted by the College of Physicians. In Chester County, high school students have been invited to The Talk, a peer-to- peer mental health and suicide prevention workshop to launch Aevidum clubs on April 1. The event is being hosted by the Downingtown STEM Academy. The one-hour documentary, Resilience: The Science of Stress and the Biology of Hope will be shown Tuesday, March 17 at 540 Trestle Place in Downingtown. The event includes a panel discussion and is sponsored by the Downingtown Area School District and the Chester County ACEs Coalition. Families for Depression Awareness offer a free webinar on March 24 at 7:00 PM to educate parents and other adults about teen depression and self-injury. Register and find out more information at this link. Tools for Taming Teen Brains, presented by psychologist and award-winning author, Jeffrey Bernstein. The free event is being held at Henderson High School, April 29 from 6:30 to 8 PM.
Suicide Prevention Efforts are State-Wide Pennsylvania's Annual Suicide Prevention Conference is planned for May 6-7 in Harrisburg. The event will provide a forum and the latest information for those who share an interest in preventing suicide across the life span, including physicians, psychologists, nurses, social workers, educators, and volunteers, as well as those who have lost a loved one to suicide or had their own suicidal experience. On April 18, the Philadelphia Phillies will play the Miami Marlins at home for the 2020 Suicide Prevention Night with the Phillies. The event is designed to raise awareness. In Chester County, the Suicide Prevention Task Force offers QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) prevention classes at no cost. Join us for this class, April 15 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Phoenixville Hospital. Webinars for Peer Specialists Find out about the Doors to Wellbeing monthly webinar series for Certified Peer Specialists. ChescoLife is offering to facilitate Community Conversations about Mental Health for local organizations to increase awareness and comfort levels around mental health. Community Conversations for 5 - 25 participants are offered at no cost and help to answer questions, such as, "How does our mental health affect us as parents and caregivers? What about the impact on our kids, families and communities? What are the challenges talking about mental health? How can we do better?" Mental Health First Aid Class Tuesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 26 from 5 - 9 PM In two evening classes, you can become a certified Mental Health First Aider. This class is being held at no cost at the Phoenixville Hospital Medical Office Building. Click for flier with registration information.
