Newsletter # 11 / 16 September 2021 A Grade 8 Tree for the Future A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that in order to aspire we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go, it is from our roots that we draw sustenance. –Wangari Maathai (Kenyan environmentalist and 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner) The RCL representatives from each Grade 8 class helped to plant their tree at the Grade Assembly held on 2 September. This is an annual tradition at Rand Park High School and the tree planting symbolises the start of the learners’ journey at our school - a new beginning of growth, strength and longevity. The Acacia sieberiana woodii (commonly known as the Paperbark Thorn) is located between the tennis courts and the A-field on the school’s campus. As the Grade 8s progress through high school, the tree will take root and its growth will represent their development. Someday, someone will sit under the shade of the tree because our Grade 8s took the time to plant it. As we celebrate the first few weeks of spring, let us remember the vital contribution that trees make to our wellbeing and to our planet – they produce oxygen, absorb carbon, stabilise the soil and combat climate change. More photos of our RCLs planting their tree are provided on pages 3 and 4 of this newsletter.

Competition was tough with classes exceeding 30 competitors. There were many nervous, highly-strung horses who were attending their first show in a couple of months due to lockdown. Our riders all competed exceptionally well, bringing home six top eight placings, with Kaitlyn winning the 70cm Equitation Class. Kaitlyn and Erin have been selected to represent the Gauteng Team at SANESA Nationals to be held in early October. Congratulations and best wishes for the National competition.
