About Ride The Rockies

Ride The Rockies is an annual Bicycle Tour in June that takes 2,000 cyclists on a
six-to-seven day ride through Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The Tour draws upon

2

the efforts of more than 100 volunteers to assist and support the cyclists in their
challenge to successfully complete the ride.

The Ride The Rockies’ route is different each year, but it always climbs a few
challenging mountain passes and showcases Colorado's spectacular scenery.
Daily rides can be as short as 35 miles or as long as 100, but generally average 45-
75 miles.

While the Tour route changes each year, the benefits and responsibilities of the
host communities remain the same. Benefits include publicity, positive economic
impact, fundraising opportunities.

Riders on past Ride The Rockies have represented all 50 states and 18 foreign
countries. Ride The Rockies is a non-competitive, rules of the road, event open
to cyclists of all ages, and riders are encouraged to ride at their own pace within
the window of the daily schedule.

Brief Overview
Colorado State Police, County and Local Authorities
Colorado State Police will have 7 officers on course dedicated
specifically to Ride The Rockies. Ride The Rockies has also worked with
County and Local Authorities to prepare for the week-long ride.

Aid Stations
Aid Stations will be located every 15-20 miles throughout the entire course. Aid
Stations will be managed by Ride The Rockies staff and volunteers. Aid Stations
will provide athletes with water and electrolyte liquids. Light, pre-packaged
factory sealed food will be provided to athletes at each aid station location. Aid
station locations will have a dedicated supply truck, as well as relief stations, trash
and recycling receptacles, bike racks and mechanics. Aid stations will start setting
up approximately 75 minutes before the first riders and immediately close after
the last rider.

Medical Plan
Stadium Ambulance will have 2 ambulances dedicated to the entire
tour that will be on the course daily. Ride The Rockies will also have a
Centura Medical Unit at the Host Cities for on-site medical needs. Ride
The Rockies will also have riding medics riding throughout the tour to
assist riders as needed. 6 SAG vehicles will be on the course to help
with non-emergency transportation. Centura Health has created the
included medical plan. Noted exceptions for RMNP.

Communication Plan
Radio Resource will be provided to essential Ride The Rockies staff, key
medical and police personnel. Staff vehicles will have radios installed
for communication. Cell phones will be utilized as backups. Daily
meetings will be required for key personnel to review the day and for
announcements for the next day.

Waste Removal Plan
Trash and recycling units will be identified as such and utilized in aid
stations and host cities as required by local mandates and permits.
Recycling on the course will be managed and self-supported by
designated Ride the Rockies aid station leads and forwarded to the next
host city to be recycled or taken to trash dumpsters. All locations will
provide the choice of trash or recycling throughout the tour.

Relief Stations
Relief stations will be located in each host city and at the aid stations.
Relief stations will include hand washing stations as directed by
permits.

Traffic Plan
Cyclists will be required to ride “Rules of the Road”, according to CO
vehicular laws. While riding in RMNP cyclists will be instructed that
they must ride single file and can not ride two abreast unless passing a
slower cyclist. Ride The Rockies has filed the necessary permits, and is
working with CDOT, CSP, Local and County Authorities and
municipalities to make sure that traffic disruption is minimized and for
the safety of the cyclists. At this time, only one road closure has been
requested and that is the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park,
for a limited duration (4:00am – 7:00am).

Course Signage

Ride The Rockies will have 2 teams dedicated to course placement and
the removal of tour signs. 1 team will put the course signs on the
course the day before each ride. A second team will remove the signs
the same day as the cyclists complete the individual day. The signs will

include the Ride The Rockies logo and provide the following
information: Directional Arrows, Follow Rules of The Road, Single File,
Slow - Steep Hill, Watch Gravel/Dirt Ahead, Aid Station Ahead, Railroad
Crossing, Oncoming Traffic, Yield to Traffic, Bike Ride in Progress, Stop
Light Ahead, and Sharp Turn Ahead, Caution - Slow.

SAG Vehicles

Ride The Rockies SAG (Support and Gear) vehicles will work as a team
to provide service to cyclists by driving the route and transporting
participants who need assistance for mechanical or fatigue issues.

Inclement Weather Plan

There is the possibility that weather and road conditions in Colorado
and in June can be such that it is unsafe for Ride The Rockies (RTR)
cyclists to begin or continue riding a day of the tour, therefore a plan is
in place to arrange for safe passage of tour participants in the event of
inclement weather.

● Utilize staff/crew vehicles
Private Support Vehicles/Charter buses on retainer and close enough to
be of assistance

Weather will be consistently monitored by the Tour Director, CSP, and
other local authorities. In the event of inclement weather the
contingency plan will be put in place and communicated to the cyclists
at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure minimal disruption to the
ride and the local community.

Alternative Route For Non-Essential Vehicles

6
