For nearly 50 years, the Canadian Celiac Association has been empowering, supporting, and advocating for people adversely affected by gluten. We are the only national organization in Canada. CCA is supported by 13 local chapters across Canada located in several major cities.
2.5 – 5 million Canadians are at risk of celiac disease or have gluten disorders. The incidence is increasing as more research is done yet 85% are yet to be diagnosed. Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune condition – impacting Celiac Disease generation after generation of families - where people have an adverse reaction to gluten which is found in wheat, rye and barley. There is no cure. They must adhere to a GFD for life. If left untreated, celiac disease will have serious long-term health implications.

4,000 individuals each year contact CCA for support either over the phone or by email. Most individuals are newly diagnosed.
In 2019 Lily, was just past her first birthday. She was in gradual decline - her mood, mobility and, most noticeably, her weight. She was extremely constipated, occasional vomiting, she refused to walk, would rarely smile and looked sunken in and pale. Her family had taken her to the family doctor twice, into CHEO three times, ultrasounds, x-rays, blood work, the works . Each time they left with the diagnosis of "severe constipation”. Each time, they told the doctors and nurses that her grandfather was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Each time Meet Lily she was told "not consistent with Celiac Disease." On the 4th trip to CHEO and 3 days later after more blood work, an NG tube, and another x-ray a GI specialist told us Lily's Celiac test came back "unmeasurably high.” She was immediately put on a strict gluten-free diet. Within two days, “our baby was once again laughing, smiling and dancing”. It only took her 6 months to catch back up to her peers on her growth chart. The CCA has been a lifesaving resource for my family.

Go hungry or be in pain? People with celiac disease often fall through the cracks at their most vulnerable point in life. Food bank volunteers don’t understand celiac disease and the special needs for people who must eat gluten free. During this COVID-19 pandemic, many food banks are simply giving out bags of assembled food that often are not safe for a celiac to consume. Individuals are often faced with going hungry or eating food that will make them sick and dramatically impact their health.
