Snapshot 2021 Connellan Airways Trust Supporting people in Outback Australia Freecall 1800 733 810 | www.connellanairwaystrust.org.au
FROM THE CHAIR 202 Connellan Airways Trust is a unique organisation. The grants and scholarships we offer encourage rural and remote people to succeed while living in these locations. The Trust is all about people who love where they live in the Outback and are seeking to learn, to lead and to thrive and access to education and health opportunities enables this. As the needs in Outback Australia change the Trust adapts to ensure that the grants and scholarships we offer continue to address the isolation and remoteness that accompanies living in the Outback. We honour the founders E.J Connellan and the Airways Shareholders, marvelling in the similarities of determination, resilience and innovation that remain steadfast in the bush. All while adapting to the environmental and industrial changes of the Outback. Regardless of technology advances, communications continue to be unreliable in the bush. Education may be available via remote learning; however practical placements still mean leaving home for weeks on end. And whilst agriculture has seen an amazing year for some, others across the Outback continue to face environmental challenges that negatively impact their families and businesses. Despite the impact of COVID19 on the available funding to the Trust, it is with awareness of the need in the Outback and the help our of generous donors, that the Trust had its biggest year of granting in ten years. We know that in strengthening access to education and health focused opportunities, we are also building on the confidence, leadership and skills of isolated, rural and remote people. People who in turn contribute to a thriving Outback. Mr Mark Coffey, Chair

Connellan Airways Trust Outback Scholarships: Charles Darwin University Jamie relocated from Central Australia to Gunbalanya last year. Working for the Department of Health in a variety of roles across outback NT was a good use of Jamie’s previous background in pre-hospital emergency care and search and rescue. In 2020 Jamie began his journey with Charles Darwin University studying a newly released Paramedicine Degree. His goal of becoming a qualified paramedic is now closer than ever. Jamie was one of two Connellan Airways Trust CDU Outback Scholarships awarded in March 2021. “Remote living is beautiful, but it is also very hard. Everything is that little bit more difficult, be it resources, logistics and so many things that are taken for granted in other settings. This course allows me to remain in the NT, study remotely and secure future employment in an area I am dedicated to success in." "The scholarship from Connellan Airways Trust assists greatly with the financial costs that accumulate with attending practical sessions on campus, and placements with St Johns Ambulance. The wet seasons means that we get completely closed off via road and I will have to charter a small aircraft to attend these essential elements of my degree. This scholarship shows that remote regions and those who choose to live in them, are not forgotten. The Trust understands the challenges that come with outback living are real. This support means I can study while remaining within the community which has become my home.” Said Jamie.
