There’s an obvious reason for my under-nutrition. What’s yours? Community Malnutrition Nicola Day, Community Food Co-ordinator and Deputy Head of Health Development, Staffordshire Public Health Team
Is Malnutrition a problem? • Malnutrition (as under-nutrition), affects about 3 million people in the UK. • Malnutrition is under-recognised and under-treated. It leads to disease, delays recovery, increases visits to GP and increases the frequency and length of hospital stay. • Currently, malnutrition is estimated to be costing the national economy (though associated NHS and social care costs) £13bn per annum.
31.01.11 ‘The Daily Mail asked the Office for National Statistics to analyse the death certificates of care home residents in England and Wales between 2005 Insert andimage large 2009….Their here experts uncovered 667 victims of dehydration and 157 of malnutrition.’ ‘Many care home residents complain that overstretched or untrained staff do not help them to eat their food – or even leave it out of reach and take it away uneaten.’

They looked on in disbelief as they watched a recording of Young eating the food which was supposed to be set in front of their mother.’
A Local Voice for Malnutrition in Staffordshire Customer insight in 2010 was derived from: Staffordshire People’s Panel (750 members) Community Watchdogs (800 Trading Standards volunteers) Two People’s Panel focus groups (involving 20 participants) Six district Carer’s Association forums (approximately 90 people)
A Local Voice for Malnutrition in Staffordshire The Staffordshire People’s Panel - A woman in Staffordshire was taken out shopping, once a week by her friend who was a participant of the focus group. - The participant ‘ensured that her friend had a meal whilst she was with her, but suspected that, during the rest of the week, her friend simply forgot to eat and then just snacked on crisps and chocolate.’ - One of the focus group’s relatives had ‘died at 83 years of age from ‘starvation’. He consistently refused medication and assistance from healthcare professionals and had thrown away ready meals that his family had left for him to eat’
A Local Voice for Staffordshire (cont’d) Of 112 postal questionnaires received, 79% considered malnutrition should be a high priority for Staffordshire The following possible solutions were suggested:- Produce an overarching communications campaign and publicise popular activities and events including luncheon clubs. Educate and inform those who may be suffering from malnutrition as well as family and friends who may be able to help. Ensure that carers who provide home help provide a consistent level of service where food provision is concerned. Ensure that standards in care homes are suitable. Improve identification and referral systems by professionals Food shopping support Better home checks Cookery training Improve support following hospital discharge Improve nutritional support in hospitals

So, what are we doing about this?
Staffordshire Scrutiny Inquiry • Inquiry event in February 2011 to:- - Raise awareness of the problem - Increase visibility and profile of malnutrition within local democratic, public health and social care agendas - Explore a multi-agency approach to prevention and management of community malnutrition. • Recommendations from the final report resulted in an Executive Action Plan.
