Is Malnutrition a problem?

• Malnutrition (as under-nutrition), affects about 3 million people in
    the UK.
• Malnutrition is under-recognised and under-treated. It leads to
disease, delays recovery, increases visits to GP and increases the
frequency and length of hospital stay.
• Currently, malnutrition is estimated to be costing the national
economy (though associated NHS and social care costs) £13bn per
    annum.

‘Many care home residents complain that overstretched or untrained staff
do not help them to eat their food – or even leave it out of reach and take
  it away uneaten.’

                 - A woman in Staffordshire was taken out shopping,
once a week by her friend who was a participant of
                 the focus group.
                 - The participant ‘ensured that her friend had a meal
whilst she was with her, but suspected that, during the
rest of the week, her friend simply forgot to eat and
then just snacked on crisps and chocolate.’
                 - One of the focus group’s relatives had
‘died at 83 years of age from ‘starvation’. He
consistently refused medication and assistance from
healthcare professionals and had thrown away ready
meals that his family had left for him to eat’

Staffordshire Scrutiny Inquiry

• Inquiry event in February 2011 to:-

         - Raise awareness of the problem
         - Increase visibility and profile of
              malnutrition within local
              democratic, public health and
              social care agendas
         - Explore a multi-agency approach
              to prevention and management of
              community malnutrition.

• Recommendations from the final report resulted
     in an Executive Action Plan.
