1. INTRODUCTION Our Mission Penta is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to bridge the gap between the enormous need for prosthetic care in developing countries and the high volume of prosthetic devices that go to waste every year in the United States. We at Penta believe that mobility is a right, and so are the opportunities for work, education, family, and success that come with it. With this principle in mind, we have developed an innovative and sustainable solution to the gap that currently exists between need and waste. Penta collects discarded and unused, yet still functional, prosthetic limbs from clinics and individuals in the U.S., and repurposes them at low costs for amputees in developing countries who do not have access to or the means for prosthetic care. In doing so, Penta provides high-quality devices to a population that would otherwise be unable to afford even the myriad low- cost options available to them. Year Ahead Penta began with Yale and Brown undergraduate students stuffing prosthetic limbs in their suitcases and bringing them to Vietnam in search of doctors able to repurpose them for amputees in need. Although we now send them in inventoried freight shipments instead of our suitcases, our team’s spirit and drive to achieve Penta’s goal of restoring mobility to amputees with no path forward has only grown stronger. Penta’s mission is the same, but our ability to create change and give people back their lives is not. Penta is now working with more partners in more countries, providing mobility to an increasing number of people. Our significantly larger infrastructure and support network helps us drive the organization forward faster and tackle more challenging obstacles. It is with this understanding of our greater ability to do good that Penta’s team looks forward to the year ahead, strategically assessing where and how we will accomplish our goals. 03 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
2. SUMMARY OF GOALS Expanding our Scope of Impact: Penta’s team wants to continue to grow our operation abroad to reach new countries, new parts of the world, and new communities of people in need. In doing so, Penta’s team will explore more ways of restoring mobility - not just to amputees! Expanding our Team: As our operation continues to expand, Penta’s team has identified the positions we need to fill to keep this ship sailing smoothly! Building New Relationships: Penta’s success relies entirely on its relationships at home and abroad. Whether they donate limbs, distribute limbs and provide care to amputees, or provide financial and operational support directly to us, we are seeking new partners everywhere. Development: Penta has gone above and beyond its fundraising goals for 2019, and we plan to do the same again in 2020! Establishing New Programs: We will raise awareness, provide more opportunities for volunteer engagement, and find new ways of collaborating with various communities, including veterans, healthcare professionals, prosthetic industry leaders, social entrepreneurs, and others that can contribute to Penta's impact. Building Penta’s Board: A board is key to the momentum, success, and guidance of any organization. Penta has thus far been steered by its founders, and we are now seeking individuals to grow our board and help grow Penta. 04 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
3. EXPANDING OUR SCOPE OF IMPACT Penta is currently delivering prosthetic components to amputees in Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Guatemala, and Ecuador through various reliable international partners. Penta sought to reach five countries in 2019 and we hope to surpass our goals once again in 2020. While expansion is important, Penta's team is conscious of the need to do so in an effective and planned manner. We have identified 3 methods of expanding our operation abroad that allow Penta's reach to grow in a sensible way, providing for new communities and improving our ability to help ones in which we already work. Through this expansion, Penta intends to fit 1,000 more people with prostheses this year. Penta intends to expand our scope of impact in three ways: A) New partners in the countries in which we are already established B) Working in new and neighboring countries in those same regions C) Bringing the valuable resource that is Penta’s operation to entirely new parts of the world 05 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
A. New Partners in Current Countries In 2020, Penta would like to establish partnerships with at least two organizations providing prosthetic care in each of our six current countries of operation. We wish to expand where we are already established so that more communities in each country can receive access to devices provided by Penta. Penta is already two-thirds of the way into achieving this goal, with only Thailand and Ecuador lacking a secondary partner facility. Vietnam - Penta already works with two organizations in Vietnam: the Young Physicians Association, a government subsidiary providing prosthetic limbs to many rural parts of Vietnam, and Bệnh Viện Chỉnh Hình Và Phục Hồi Chức Năng TPHCM (Hospital Orthopedics and Rehabilitation HCMC), the largest orthopedic hospital in the country. Thailand - Penta is proud to be working with the Sirindhorn School of Orthotics and Prosthetics is pursuing another partner in Thailand that can provide care to rural communities without access to medical facilities. Sri Lanka - Penta's two partners in Sri Lanka are the Colombo Friend-in-Need Society, based in the capital in the southwest of the country, and the Jaffna Jaipur Centre for Disability Rehabilitation in the north (Jaffna). Penta would like to establish relationships with more than two organizations in Sri Lanka to test our ability to connect various partners to each other. As a smaller country, Sri Lanka is a great testing ground and we will be able to determine how much more we can reduce waste and increase the chances that patients receive a specific component that they need. Penta is thus in discussion with the Colombo Outer Lions Club to bring prostheses to Sri Lankan amputees in Kandy, in the center of the country, Trincomalee on the eastern coast, and Battaramulla, a suburb outside of Colombo. Pakistan - Penta is working with the Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences and the Fauji Foundation, two large organizations with government subsidization and a wide reach in the country. We intend to strengthen these relationships instead of looking for more partners within this country. Guatemala - Penta works with two international organizations that provide prosthetic limbs to the limb loss community in Guatemala: the Florida O&P Outreach Team (FOOT) and the Range of Motion Project (ROMP). Ecuador - Currently, Penta works with one organization, ROMP, that provides prosthetic limbs to the region. Penta will identify another organization to work with this year to which we can provide limbs to those in need. 06 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
B. New Countries in Current Regions As Penta grows, it makes sense strategically to work in as many countries in a region as possible, allowing us to make sure that nobody is left out and to find more efficient shipping networks and methods. Penta has identified or is in discussion with a number of potential partners to begin achieving this goal. Southeast Asia - Penta first began operating in Southeast Asia and is now providing limbs to two countries in that region. Penta's team has identified Cambodia and Laos as logical next steps for the region, as they border with and connect Vietnam and Thailand, where Penta is currently operating. Within these, Penta is considering working with Exceed, the Persons with Disabilities Foundation, and the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise as adequate and respectable organizations that can help deliver prostheses to these countries. South Asia - Penta is not yet in the largest country in this region, a country that is a region in and of itself: India. Penta’s goal is to establish relationships with 4+ partners in India this year, but will be taking a calculated approach in expanding there due to the large population in need. Penta has already identified a number of viable partners and will be continuing to develop our relationships with them in 2020. These include: the Lifeline Express, a train providing medical care to rural parts of the country, the Christian Medical College - Vellore, and the Madhavrao Scindia Hospital in Kerala. 07 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
C. New Regions of the World Tens of millions of people around the world are in need of what Penta provides. Although we cannot help everyone, Penta's team is committed to spreading our operation to every corner of the world that needs us. Throughout our development, Penta has repeatedly received requests from individual amputees across the African continent for prostheses, and we are aware of their desperate need. However, without a facility or prosthetist to refer them to, Penta has been unable to help these individuals and address their desperate need for affordable care and mobility... until now! West and North Africa: We are very happy to have accomplished the first steps in establishing a relationship with the Organisation Africaine pour le Développement des Centres pour Personnes Handicappées (OADCPH). The OADCPH, Penta's first partner in Africa, is based in Togo but supports member facilities in 33 countries across the continent. Although Penta cannot currently provide limbs to all of these facilities, we are working with the OADCPH to develop a coherent growth strategy within West and North Africa. Penta is also in discussion with the National Hospital of Niamey in Niger and a number of nonprofits and NGOs based in Ghana to begin operations. 08 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
4. EXPANDING OUR TEAM With a small team, many tasks that we accomplish within our organization are a joint effort. Certain tasks currently performed by our executive director, chief operating officer, and chief strategy officer should be broken out for new positions as the operation grows. Considering our 2020 goals, Penta’s logistical programs, fundraising needs, media and content management, and other facets of our operation will face increasing strains and the need for more specific and tailored supervision. Penta’s team thus anticipates the need for positions overseeing these specific functions, both part-time and full-time. Development Officer - We have had enormous success in fundraising this past year. We would like to continue that success and devote a full-time position to managing this vital part of the organization. Warehouse Manager - We have a high need for support in inventorying, disassembling, and packaging prostheses for shipments overseas, a time- consuming but core part of what does Penta does. We will be creating a new volunteer program to provide extra hands for these duties, but are also seeking a part-time warehouse supervisor. Social Media and Content Manager - Establishing Penta as a brand in the US amputee community is important to building our collection network for limbs, as well as generally becoming a well-recognized international organization. Penta has identified the need for a part-time social media and content manager to help achieve this. Program Leads/Ambassadors in certain countries - As our operation grows in each country to which we deliver limbs, we need more help on the ground organizing the delivery of shipments, customs processing, and communications with partners. Penta will be establishing volunteer representatives and an "Ambassador" program to help manage these operations overseas. 09 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
5. BUILDING NEW RELATIONSHIPS Currently, Penta works with dozens of facilities and companies to collect used, and sometimes unused, prostheses and prosthetic equipment. Our major donors include Hanger Clinic, Trulife, and Knit-Rite, as well as many smaller, local and regional organizations. Penta relies on these organizations, as well as the goodwill of individual amputees, to deliver mobility abroad and are enormously grateful for their support. Penta's team will build new domestic relationships in 2020 to continue to raise our collection rate. Individual Donors: Penta's team intends to increase our reach to the valuable individuals in the amputee community who contribute their used limbs - very personal and intimate items - to pass their own mobility on to those in need. Penta will be working with more local support groups to do this. P & O Clinics: Penta's team will continue to build and strengthen our existing relationships with prosthetic and orthotic services clinics on a national, regional, and local scale, as well as finding new facilities of this type to contribute their valuable stockpiles. Clinics are an excellent resource for Penta, acting as hubs and drop-off points for individuals seeking to donate their used limbs. Manufacturers: We will also strive to work with prosthetic limb manufacturers who can help us provide a consistent stream for donated prostheses. Many manufacturers receive returns in near-perfect condition but throw them away into what they call "boneyards." We have identified Proteor, College Park Ind., Ottobock, and Ossur as groups with enormous stockpiles of this entirely useable yet discarded inventory. Manufacturers of non- hardware components, such as socks and liners, are also targets of ours in 2020. Penta will pursue Willow Wood and Alps to supplement the donations we currently receive from Knit-Rite. 10 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
6. DEVELOPMENT Penta has a long-term goal to raise $1 million by 2022 and has raised over $150,000 in the past 6 months. Penta's team intends to raise at least another $300,000 this year, capitalizing on our newly gained experience, increased resources, and already strong support to help us achieve that goal. Penta will raise these funds through a number of channels. Grants: Penta will continue to pursue support from granting institutions that are passionate about our cause and want to bolster our ability to create change. We have only scratched the surface in finding institutional backing and will be requesting a higher level of support this year. Private Donations: Individuals who believe in giving the gift of mobility through Penta are essential to our mission. Penta's team will source more major donations from individuals this year, as well as setting Penta up on crowdfunding platforms as we try to reach a larger audience. Events: Penta will use the community engagement events that we host in 2020 to provide additional fundraising opportunities. We will organize raffles, auctions, sponsorships, and other fundraising opportunities to supplement our income at these events. Corporate Sponsorships: Penta will also be pursuing longer term sponsorship relationships with companies that have an interest in advancing our program. This includes those in the US and international P&O or healthcare industries who may or may not already donate components, those operating or beginning operations in the countries in which we are active, and companies that already provide operational support to Penta, amongst others. 11 PENTA MEDICAL RECYCLING CORP. | STRATEGY REPORT 2020
7. PROGRAMS, VOLUNTEERING, & EVENTS Educational Programs: Penta will be restarting its educational volunteer programs abroad in 2020. These provide students in our countries of operation with the opportunity to engage with our patients and to learn about healthcare, orthopedics, disability, and social entrepreneurship. As we have done in the past with huge success, Penta will include a pitch-off in these programs where students can develop their own innovative ways of helping others. In addition, Penta plans to organize its first medical education trip, sending committed prosthetists abroad to teach the professionals at our partner organizations advanced techniques and how to fit the more complex mechanisms to which they are not always accustomed. Disassembly Days: Penta wants to provide more volunteer opportunities in the US. One way that we will do this is to host Disassembly Days, where we gather volunteer groups to help dismantle, sort, and package the limbs that we are sending abroad. Community Engagement Events: Penta will be hosting more events in 2020 that provide Save the Date! opportunities for On Saturday, April 18 Penta will be hosting Amped for community engagement Mobility alongside AMP1, a stand-up amputee and brand building. These basketball team that inspires those facing disability to will be focused around get active! 9. ESTABLISHING A BOARD Early in 2020, Penta will put together a 5-7 member Board of Directors reflecting the needs of the organization and the cross-section of topics at which it sits. Penta is pursuing professionals in the healthcare, prosthetics, non-profit, environmental, and startup sectors to provide guidance, support, and oversight. In addition, Penta's team is seeking individuals who have suffered from limb-loss or are heavily involved in the limb-loss community. Currently, Henry Iseman leads the organization as Chairman of the Board, with co-founders, Trang and Victor as Vice-Chairs. Follow us to see our progress!
