EVENT OVERVIEW & HISTORY The Tour of the Moon was made famous in the 1970’s and 1980’s as a premier stage of the Coors Classic bicycle race DATE: and later in the classic cycling movie American Flyers. It Saturday, September 29, 2018 continues to be considered one of the classic road rides in the western United States. The breath taking high des- LOCATION: ert scenery and beautiful roads make this a special day of Colorado National Monument cycling. Grand Junction, Colorado Cyclist can choose from the classic Tour of the Moon 41- PARTICIPANTS: mile course or the extended Tour of the Moon 61-mile 2014 - 1900 cyclists metric century course that also features the town of Fruita. 2015 - 2000 cyclists (SOLD OUT) Both courses start and finish at Two Rivers Convention Cen- 2016 - 2000 cyclists (SOLD OUT) ter in downtown Grand Junction. A minimum of three amply 2017 - 2000 cyclists (SOLD OUT) stocked aid/rest stations will be positioned throughout the courses. THE CYCLING MARKET More than 59.2 million Americans ride bicycles. Women comprise 46 percent of these cyclists. This segment of 2017 RIDER DEMOGRAPHICS the market is not only growing in numbers, but increas- ing their spending clout. AGE RANGE: 29 and under 6% America’s cyclists can be described as upscale, active, 30-39 19% and open-minded. This can make them an attractive 40-49 33% target for industries other than cycling. MEDIAN AGE: The cyclists attracted to the Tour of the Moon are older, 47 years old married, and have more disposable income to spend on their passions. Cycling ranks third behind walking and GENDER: swimming as the most popular participation sport.
