cristóbal balenciaga museoa Education Programme for Schools 2018–2019
Designed to facilitate knowledge and to enjoy the museum and its content through participative and educational initiatives, the programme consists of activities adapted to different educational stages and adjusted to curricular contents, using clothing and everything surrounding it as an effective educational tool. The main objectives are: 1 To offer useful and enriching activities outside the classroom, working with familiar and everyday ideas such as clothing as a vehicle for the more complex knowledge and concepts that are part of the school curriculum. 11 To promote the appreciation of cultural heritage and, in particular, that derived from the creativity of Cristóbal Balenciaga, through direct contact with his work, supporting and guiding students in the search of the meaning attributed to the works, and in the construction of their own knowledge. 111 To transmit knowledge to students regarding materials, colours, shapes, techniques and other aspects related to the profession of dressmaking and to clothing which will enable them to develop their own tastes and to discern and appreciate textile work and creations in their everyday lives.
The programme is based on the myriad possibilities offered by clothing to foster the development and curricular skills of students, incorporating processes of appreciation, reflection and creation. The activities are based on three main themes, common to all of the education stages, and the proposals are addressed from the needs and specific requirements of each one. Body and Silhouette Forms and figures / Social codes / Diversity Sustainability Craftwork / Natural materials / Customization and recycling Art, Science, Technology Mathematics and geometry ⁄ Textile techniques / Creative electronics
Body and Silhouette Clothing is closely related to the shape of the body it dresses. The way a garment is made immediately draws attention to parts of the body, either highlighting or concealing them, to achieve the desired silhouette. A silhouette which has changed over history as a cultural product, i.e. as the reflection of the values expressed by a society and by a time. Understanding the relationship between body, dress and fashion – as things stand today, no longer tied to monolithic currents of thought – helps to put these phenomena into context, fosters respect for diversity, and presents this element as a source of creativity and experimentation. Sustainability Awareness of practices compatible with the limits of nature is not just another subject for our society, but an obligation extending to all spheres and which must open debates and promote practices in all areas of our everyday lives. In fashion too awareness is growing with the promotion of certain sustainable paths such as local and zero kilometre production, recycling, neocrafts, the return to natural and organic raw materials, the new biomaterials, etc. In the different educational stages emphasis is placed on awareness and activism by means of practical proposals. Art, Science, Technology The word Art comes from the Latin ars, a term of several meanings such as method, way of doing, science, knowledge, skill and trade, among others. Science from research and reflection, technique or technology in its application to a practical purpose, art from its aesthetic, or intellectual objective, and fashion as a cultural expression can be exponents of the numerous ways these concepts cross one another. From mathematics and geometry to pattern design – as expressed by Gipuzkoa’s Juan de Alcega in the 16th century in his treatise Libro de Geometría, Práctica y Traça (Book on Geometry, Practice and Patterns) – and even electronics, 3d printing or the revolution of smart materials, fashion can propose theoretical and practical examples of this rich ecosystem.
