1 Active Opportunities – September 2021 Calls for Proposals (Conferences): Annual Meeting of the Florida Conference of Historians • The Florida Conference of Historians (FCH) invites proposals for its 2022 annual meeting to be held on Saint Leo University's main campus. Faculty, independent scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates are all welcome. The organization's name reflects the geographic location of its annual meeting and does not reflect any limitation on subject matter. Organizers are accepting proposals on any and all areas of historical inquiry in the following categories: o Individual papers o Panels o Posters o Media and Film Deadline for submissions: December 4, 2021. • Details: https://networks.h-net.org/node/73374/announcements/7996089/2022-annual- meeting-florida-conference-historians Seeking Freedom: The Underground Railroad in the Mid-Atlantic • The Lincoln University Center for the Study of the Underground Railroad and Voices Underground, an organization focused on preserving and sharing the Underground Railroad's story, welcomes proposals for its inaugural 2022 conference, Seeking Freedom: The Underground Railroad in the Mid-Atlantic. The conference will take place at Lincoln University on March 31, April 1-2, 2022. We welcome proposals from all fields and disciplines, from historians, preservationists, independent scholars, social scientists, community leaders, undergraduate, and graduate students. We encourage individuals who are researching sites of memory, the role of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) such as Lincoln University and Cheyney University, and the importance of the free and enslaved African American community through the end of the Civil War to submit. We also desire papers that explore any or all the diverse complexities of the UGRR, including known and unknown physical sites (homes, corridors, routes) and those that extract the voices of the unheard, invisible, and underrated. Individuals may also suggest and write on topics that are not listed if the subject falls within this symposium's overall theme. The organizing committee will consider individual papers, panels, and roundtables. Panels and roundtables must designate or suggest a commentator and moderator separate from the presenters. 2 to prospective participants who submit by October 15, 2021. After this date, the committee will review submissions on a rolling basis. We plan to announce the acceptance of regular submissions by December 15, 2021. • Details: https://www.lincoln.edu/seeking-freedom-underground-railroad-mid-atlantic Courses and Seminars: Fellowships and Internships: Chicago History Museum • Internships at CHM are challenging educational experiences designed for undergraduate and graduate students. Working alongside staff members in a tutorial arrangement, interns gain valuable skills and training in museum practice, archival administration, arts administration, and historical scholarship. Most CHM internships are unpaid, although many students receive academic credit. While specific projects fluctuate with the institution’s needs and priorities, a diverse assortment of opportunities is generally available. The following departments offer internships: Administration, Collections Care and Management, Education and Public Programming, Exhibition Design and Development, Marketing and Communications, Publications, and Visitor Services. Applications for summer internships are generally considered between February and March, fall internships between June and September, and spring internships between October and January. • Details: https://www.chicagohistory.org/internships/ Indiana Statehouse Internships – House Democrats • This unique learning experience gives students and recent graduates the opportunity to work alongside state representatives at the Indiana Statehouse during a session of the Indiana General Assembly. Full-time, paid internships are offered in the policy, communications, fiscal analysis and member services divisions of the caucus. 3 Indiana Statehouse Internships – House Republicans • The Indiana House of Representatives Republican Internship Program offers paid, spring semester internships at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis. This internship is a unique opportunity to gain practical knowledge of state government through active participation in the legislative process. Working closely with legislators, interns develop professional skills while strengthening their political knowledge. The experiences gained while interning with the House Republican Caucus will benefit students’ academic growth. During the legislative session, House Republican interns are a part of a governing body that produces laws and shapes public policy for Indiana's 6 million residents. Interns work in legislative, communications/media relations, fiscal policy, and general policy divisions. The application deadline for 2022 session legislative internship applications is Oct. 31, 2021. • Details: https://www.indianahouserepublicans.com/2019-house-republican-internship- program/ Evansville Museum • This unique opportunity is designed to give university students an introduction to curatorial work at a mid-size, general museum. The intern will work directly with the Evansville Museum’s curator of history. Students will gain experience in the exhibition process, collection research, and related topics with an overall focus on local history. The successful candidate should be familiar with basic historic research techniques, be able to accomplish varied tasks, and have the ability to work both in a team setting and independently. Applications are accepted from students currently enrolled in college and majoring in history. These internships are popular and are often filled several semesters in advance. This internship is non-paying and requires 150 hours for completion during the fall and spring semesters. Summer internships vary in the hours required and in availability. All internships are scheduled within a work week of Monday-Friday. Interns, working under the guidance of curators, educators, or department heads, assist in routine departmental work that ranges from special projects and research to clerical support. Interns are undergraduate, graduate or recent college graduates, and majors in many fields are welcome. Internships are offered unpaid or for academic credit. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program provides specialized training in the curatorial field for students across the United States from diverse backgrounds. The program is organized around two components: the Summer Academy and the Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program. Students must first apply to a Summer Academy, to be held at each of the six partner museums. Summer Academies are one-week immersion programs designed to provide a rich experience in the museum environment and expose the participants to career options related to art and art history. At the end of each Summer Academy, participants are invited to apply for the Fellowship Program. Fellows participate in the Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program throughout their undergraduate career with the goal of entering into a graduate program.
