J O U R N A L News from Wellington Secondary College Edition 9: June 14 2019 UPCOMING DATES: Year 9 Exams - Monday June 17 Winter Concert - Wednesday June 19 Last Day of Term 2 - Friday June 28 Unit 1 Biology Zoo Excursion The Unit 1 Biology excursion to Melbourne Zoo was an enjoyable experience that allowed us to see the different animal adaptations that we have been studying in class. Although our time there was brief, we were still able to experience the wonder of animals with the help of the kind staff at the Zoo. In particular, we found it interesting to see the adaptations we were learning about in the classroom, in real life. For example, we saw how the thick fur of the snow leopard makes them suitable for the cold environments; we saw how meerkats take turns to keep watch over their pack in case of danger; and we saw how the bodies of seals make them more streamline in the water allowing them to avoid predators. We were able to immerse ourselves with the wildlife and sympathise with the endangered animals. We endorse the efforts made by the zookeepers to feed, to care and to advocate for the endangered animals. As previously mentioned, our time at the Zoo was too short and we were unable to investigate and develop our knowledge of all the adaptations of all the animals at the Zoo. In hindsight, we could have used our time better and suggest to future students of Biology to plan their visits beforehand. Janzen Perante, Alrina Lobo and Vign Pelayo Biology Students

Year 9 Kids in the Kitchen The Year 9 Kids in the Kitchen class designed and produced mouth watering Family Pasta Meals. The students really challenged themselves to think about which ingredients worked well together and how they would write up their own recipe on the day of production. Students were impressed with the end product and most reported they would make this recipe again for their families. Voula Rivans Food Technology Teacher Year 7/8 Interschool Netball While it was cold and wet outside, inside was perfect conditions for netball. With two Year 7 and one Year 8 team playing against competitive sides from Brentwood, Wheelers Hill and South Oakleigh, it made for exciting and highly contested games. Year 7 girls had great team play and spirit, with great defence, passing and scoring opportunities in all games. Many girls had not played much netball, and the umpires commented about the improvement in our teams as the games progressed. Meanwhile, even with minimal prep time before the competition, the Year 8’s looked like they had been playing for years. The girls started off slow against a tough team in Brentwood but were then able to dominate in the following game against South Oakleigh. Our teams should be very proud of the way they played and worked together. The umpires commended the girls on their respectful attitude, sportsmanship and desire to have fun over the games. Whilst our teams missed out the finals, we are confident we can build towards next year when we come back together on the netball court. Janene Watt and Brook Moon Netball Coaches

Year 12 PE MET’s Incursion The Year 12 Physical Education class were fortunate enough to have MET's Performance Consulting come to the college to conduct a live blood lactate test. This saw a student have his blood lactate levels taken, so that the class could see first hand the changes that were occurring inside his body due to the increase in exercise intensity. Students actively involved in the incursion as Tyler from MET's was able to discuss with them the changes as they were appearing. MET's were able to relate the discussions directly to the students studies to enhance and consolidate their learning. Kerryn Riddiford Health and Physical Education Curriculum Area Leader On May 28, a team from Deakin University known as METS Education paid a visit to our Year 12 Physical Education class. Their visit assisted in consolidating our knowledge as well as going into detail about certain concepts which proved to be very beneficial. The session allowed our class to analyse different types of data and gave us the opportunity to think critically about what we've already learnt and how to apply it to a practical situation. One of the students from our class said " It was good since it cleared up a lot of concepts that I was unsure about before the session. I learnt a lot and it was very informative" (Sanketh Nellori 12G). Ultimately, both the practical and theory based work that was presented, proved to be very enjoyable.
