Integrated Urbanism: Neckar Re...Loaded True, Stuttgart is located on the Neckar. But in the Stuttgart Region, the Neckar valley is primarily marked by industrial and business parks, traffic and energy infrastructure. So how can Stuttgart become a River City? A real chance is provided by the modernization of energy infrastructure faci- lities (such as the Gaisburg coal-fired power station which is to be replaced by a gas-fired power station) which will generate free land on the banks of the River Neckar. Such areas are ready to be converted into true urban quarters open towards the river. A new interdisciplinary research pro- ject tries to figure out the best way to seize this chance: The BMBF project WECHSEL (2017-2019) involves the SI along with IER, ZIRIUS (all of Stutt- gart University), the City and the Stadtwerke of Stuttgart. The SI Integrated Research and Design Studios (IRD) aim to involve stu- dents in complex and transdisciplinary projects allowing for creative and strategic alliances and relationships among various stakeholders. These al- liances are seen as the basis for innovative environmental and urban plan- ning approaches. The course is designed to prepare the next generation of urban practitioners to integrate new modes of research and design into practice. To begin with, we will analyse the Neckar riverscape with its urban, indus- trial and infrastructural heritage, we will look into the topics of climate, energy, land-use, current statistics, and include policy, planning and parti- cipation under the headline of strategic development concept for transfor- ming the industrial river site into an attractive urban quarter.
