70s

14
In the swinging sixties, hippies
preferred wearing handmade mate-
rials like patchwork, crochet and
knitting, as a way of going against
mainstream fashion. However, in
the 1970s, fashion designers start-
ed using embroidery in their new
fashion clothing. Fashion shows
would consist of clothing that fitted
the “hippie style” catagory which
would be lots of embroidery cloth-
ing. In the 1970s, woman were re-
flecting their clothing to their new
found sexual freedom which had
just started increasing. More clothes
were produced for woman that was
inspired from menswear, such as
trouser suits, which became more
feminine and less form-fitting.
Women typically wore midi skirts,
maxi dresses, tie dye, frayed jeans
and folk-embroidered Hungarian
blouses. To give it more of a hippie
vibe, this was usually paired with
chokers, headbands and jewelry
made out of stones, feathers and
beads. Men usually wore bell bot-
tom and wide-leg trousers, long
collared shirts, tie dye tops, em-
broiderd folk designs and tight
tees. The 1970s were known as the
“disco era” which influenced lots of
bold and daring clothing choices.

                                  15
80s

16
In the early 1980s, the fashion was
very similar to the late 1970s, in
terms of bold statement outfits.
By the mid 1980s, the mainstream
fashion was bright coloured ac-
cessories like sunglasses, bangles
and hoop earrings for women. This
also included bold makeup, teased
hair and neon clothes as part of
the style which was claimed most
popular with younger crowds like
teenagers. In 1987, branded clothing
like the “Coca-Cola” and “MTV”
brands had a big impact on fashion
as teenagers would be inspired by
celebrities dressed in wild and bold
clothes in music videos. For men,
activewear was a popular choice
of clothing in the 80s. It was now
acceptable to wear sportswear at
events which would men would
typically wear formal clothing. Boys
were either wearing NFL clothes
or lots and lots of denim. This
introduced double denim. Teen-
age boys would wear denim jackets
matched with denim jeans. Turtle-
necks were also very popular within
men in this decade, whcih they usu-
ally matched with a bold coloured,
thick sweater. Popular clothing
for women would be bright neon
colours and wearing clothes with
brand names like Nike was very
important.

                                       17
90s

18
In the early 1990s, the mainstream fashion
consisted of loose fitting and colourful
clothes. Until a new style was introduced.
The “grudge” look is the complete opposite
to the bold and colourful outfits. Every shop
in town was raided for flannel checkered
shirts and teenagers were looking through
their parents old clothes to find some au-
thentic jeans. In the 90s, hip hop music
became the most popular among younger
groups and along with that came their
style of clothing. Starting in the mid 90s,
military clothes were the new main-
stream fashion, with camouflage trou-
sers being popular. By the late 90s, the
“grudge” style passed and people were
back to wearing branded clothing.
For women in the 1990s, it was pop-
ular to wear black leggings with an
oversized jumper, flannel shirts,
birkenstocks, denim clothes, sol-
id colours and camo clothes. For
men, popular clothes would be
overalls with one strap down,
cargo pants, denim and flannel
checkered shirts. Accessories
would include snapback hats
which was influenced from the
hip hop rapper style.
