Hornchurch High Student Trae Lewis is raising money
for Skin Cancer Research Fund by doing 100 free
throws in 40 minutes
Trae Lewis is 13 years old, and last year he tragically
lost his dad, Shaun Lewis (Stormin mc) to skin
cancer, age 34.
Trae says "My dad fought this awful disease for 2
years and had several operations, he was a true
soldier until the end."
"He was a brilliant dad to me and my little brother and
was taken away from us way to soon."
This year on the anniversary of his dad's death, Trae
will make 100 free throws in 40 minutes in order to
raise money to help others going through what his
dad went through.

Wednesday 13th Feb saw more success at the Havering Schools Trampolining Competition, this time for
the senior teams.

Both the year 11 boys and girls came in second place, only being beaten by a very strong Hall Mead team,
with both the year 10 boys and girls achieving third place.

This added to the success of the juniors on Tuesday means a very successful competition all round.

Year 5 Andy Warhol Soup Cans
250 year 5 students from Harrow Lodge, Towers and
Crowlands junior schools came to Hornchurch High
school to participate in a taster competition day where
they worked in teams to make robots, learnt some
Chinese, replicated Andy Warhol masterpieces and did
a 'whodunit' in History to name a few of the activities.
Our students had a great time helping with the day and
mentored the younger students on secondary life.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Mayor praises pupils for
cleaning up community
Havering’s Mayor praised pupils from
Hornchurch High School for their community spirit
when they turned into local volunteers for the day
recently.

Year 10 students stepped out in the community in
what they called a Drop Down Day to litter pick,
pack bags at Tesco supermarket, plant bulbs and
shrubs and sort and clean items at a charity shop.

Havering Volunteers to help pupils to help them get
more involved in their local community to find out

more about their borough and to take pride in their sur-
                                                        roundings.

Their efforts were rewarded with a trip to Havering Town
Hall where they met the Mayor Councillor Dilip Patel and
were presented with certificates to acknowledge their
                                                        efforts.

Councillor Dilip Patel said:

“The young people are a real credit to the borough and
have learned so much about what a difference it can
make to a community when we come together and
work with the same purpose.”

Shelley Hart, CEO of Havering Volunteers, added:

“Young people are often getting bad publicity, blamed
for anti-social behaviour and all the knife crime that is
happening. These students were a real credit and each
and every one of them should feel proud of the
achievements they made that day. We are proud to
have been part of this “drop down day.

“The organisations that the children supported were
amazing and felt that the day was really worthwhile.”

She added that one student was particularly upset that
after he had picked up litter someone had dropped
more.

“He said he will think twice about any rubbish he has
and dispose of it properly from now on,” she said.

On Wednesday the 10th April a few of our students visit-
ed Quarles college for the day. On their day they worked
hard to make some yummy looking cookies
As Easter approaches Hornchurch High School is
     holding an Egg-citing competition called
              ‘Hard Boiled History’
To enter, just hard boil at least one egg and then
turn it into a historical figure. If you place your
person into a scene it will be even better.
Who will be in your scene?
Egg Sheeran? Egg-bert Einstein? Kim Kardeggian?
The competition will close on the 30th April and all
entries must be given to Miss Arnold by this date.
All years are eligible and there will be prizes for 1st,
                  2nd and 3rd place.
Reporting Absences

Any absence from school due to illness, appointments or any other reason MUST be
                                  reported to the

Attendance Office by 9.00am at the latest

Please either call the Attendance line on:

                 01708 691441 x 232 or via ParentMail App
                 or via email jbryan@hornchurchhigh.com

Absences should always be followed up by written confirmation from the
parent/carer. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.

There is a clear link between poor attendance at school and lower academic
achievement – how can your child learn if they are not here?

Attendance is important because your child will not make progress if they do not
attend school. If your child receives an attendance figure of 90% every year of their
school life, they would miss over a whole year of their schooling.

We need your help to raise whole school attendance.

Any students who arrive late to school or lessons will be issued with a red Late Slip
and MUST attend a Late Detention for 30 minutes after school on the SAME day.
Drop Down Day—Trip to
