2019 International Summer School on »Facing the Future – Migration and Intercultural Dialogue in a Sustainable Society«, July 15 – 30 Welcome to our Summer School! The Summer School »Facing the Future – Migration and Intercultural Dialogue in a Sustainable Society« provides the opportunity to compare scientific views of migration as a phenomenon in Germany and Central America and to discuss them among (doctoral) students and professors of both regions. Moreover an interdisciplinary approach applied to intercultural dialogue will be offered during the Summer School. The School is organized by the Costa Rica Center, which is an established research cluster operat- ing in Osnabrück, Germany and San José, Costa Rica since 2014, as well as a Service Agency since 2018. Its efforts are mainly devoted to the research on future-oriented, value-based, intercultural and social issues and tasks, focusing primarily on the following fields: teaching and education, peace, economy, environment, biodiversity and sustainability. The Costa Rica Center counts with numerous individual and institutional members, each renowned in their respective fields. www.costaricazentrum.uni-osnabrueck.de/en/who_we_are/overview What can you expect? The objective of the Summer School »Facing the Future: Migration and Intercultural Dialogue in a Sustainable Society« is to better understand the realities and backgrounds of migratory movements and the challenges of integrative and cohesive societies in Germany/Europe and Costa Rica/Cen- tral America. One aim is to explore the many fields in which intercultural dialogue could strongly and significantly benefit and aid the integration of cultures encountering each other – that is, not only of the migrant community, but of the hosting society as well. We will discuss what each of the different scientific disciplines could contribute, and already do contribute, to aid in the conserva- tion and protection of common values, as well as human rights, from both the Central American and German perspectives. Please find attached a detailed program overview.
Program The »Facing the Future« Summer School will encompass three major areas of study related to migration and intercultural dialogue within sustainable societies. 1. Realities and Backgrounds of Migration The first focus area of our Summer School will be on the general topic of migration and current developments in both Germany and Costa Rica, in their respective contexts of Europe and Central America, under the major title »Realities and Backgrounds of Migration.« The seminars will be accompanied by a course on the topic of »Intercultural Competencies« which main focus lies on »Multicultural (Communication) Skills«, including theoretical and practical knowledge of intercul- tural communication and introducing intercultural differences of communication. This focus area will be concluded with a roundtable session for collegial exchange and with a Symposium on the topic of general migration. 2. Interdisciplinary Approaches to Intercultural Dialogue The second focus area of the Summer School will be on »Interdisciplinary Approaches to Intercul- tural Dialogue«, in which professionals from various subject areas will introduce the context-spe- cific implications of migration, based on perspectives from educational science, intercultural management, theology and psychology. Each day will be dedicated to specific disciplines, all of which will involve speakers from both countries. 3. Good Practices and Comparative Research Methodologies The third focus area will be on »Good Practices and Comparative Research Methodologies« in which effective applied practices will be presented during seminars and shown in action during excursions to organizations of interest. Academic excursions will take place, among others, to the German Foundation for Peace Research and to the Sievert Foundation for Science and Culture located in Osnabrück. Also will be held seminars in comparative research methodologies, of both quantitative and qualitative nature. The last day of the Summer School will be focused on the content learned and reflected by the participants. The aim of this workshop is to explore the many different applications of the knowl- edge gained throughout the Summer School »Facing the Future« that can be taken back to and implemented in your academic and work contexts.
Eligibility Undergraduate and graduate students from Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Germany in fields related to those covered by the courses are welcome to apply. The participating students must be currently enrolled in a master or doctoral program, especially in the faculties/subjects »Educational Science«, »Psychology«, »Sociology« and »Theology«. Since all of the courses are taught in English or Spanish, a level of B2 (according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages) or similar knowledge is required for both languages. Participants must be over the age of 18. Since every student from Germany will take part in our buddy program, you should be motivated to apply your social competencies by accompanying a student from Central America concerning German life and culture. Costs There will be no program fee to pay, but the participating students from Germany will have to pay for their expenditure on travel board and lodging. Also German students will have to organise their accomodation themselves. Buddy Program Every student from Germany will accompany a student from abroad to support him in any ques- tions that concern German life and culture during the Summer School. This buddy program will offer you mentoring experiences. What else does the Summer School offer? In addition to the academic content you will take part in a rich cultural program: • in a tour of the University and surroundings • in international Dinners • in a traditional night tour through the historic city center of Osnabrück Apply now!
