BAPTISM OF OUR LORD January 9, 2022, 11:30am (Rebroadcast at 5:30pm) PRELUDE “Holy Spirit” by Bryan Torwalt and Katie Torwalt (see screens for lyrics) GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. CALL TO WORSHIP AND AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. PRESENTATION L: Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism as we come before God to make public affirmation of baptism into Christ. Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you that you have made us your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called us to yourself, enlightened us with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished us in the community of faith. Uphold us and all your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. C: Amen. PROFESSION OF FAITH L: I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? C: I renounce them. L: Do you believe in God the Father? C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. L: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. 3
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. L: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. AFFIRMATION L: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism; to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? C: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. L: People of God, do you promise to support and pray for one another in your life in Christ? C: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. L: Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Stir up in your people the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence both now and forever. C: Amen. OPENING SONG “Come, All You People (Uyai mose)” by Alexander Gondo (see screens for lyrics) 4
PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. Almighty God, you anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son. Keep all who are born of water and the Spirit faithful in your service, that we may rejoice to be called children of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE L: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. ANNOUNCEMENTS WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, song, and prayers. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE READING Acts 8:14-17 R: The Reading is from Acts, the 8th Chapter. 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16(for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. R: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 5
SONG OF THE WORD “Down Galilee’s Slow Roadways” 6
GOSPEL Luke 3:15-17,21-22 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 3rd Chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Pastor Dave Sonnenberg PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each petition concludes: L: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. OFFERING INVITATION AND PRAYER L: Lord, we thank you for Your faithfulness. THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE P: Bright shining God, inner light of all faithful souls, we celebrate your gifts of love, creation, and art. We rejoice that you have made us in your image and call us to live in your limitless love. You bring peoples and leaders to the dawn of your rising. You sent your only child, our morning star, to light a way in our night and lead us to justice and peace. Your Holy Spirit shines good news into our lives. Each daybreak you call us to feed the hungry, bring recovery of sight, liberate the oppressed, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds, and keep watch for the dawn of your commonwealth on earth. For all of this we give you thanks. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. LORD’S PRAYER L: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION L: The gifts of God for the people of God. C: Thanks be to God. 9

FAREWELL AND GODSPEED TO PHILIP MEUSCHKE Pastor: Philip, as you leave our congregation, we wish to bid you farewell, and we pray for God’s blessings. A reading from Philippians: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:4-9) Brief comments about those who are leaving and their life in the congregation may follow. In holy baptism our Lord Jesus Christ received you and made you a member of his church. When you came to this congregation we rejoiced to welcome you into the mission we share as the people of God. In this community you have come to know and to share in God’s loving purpose for you and for all creation. God has blessed you in this community, and God has blessed us through you. We encourage you to continue to receive and share God’s gifts at Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Dillon, Colorado, united with us in the body of Christ and the mission we share. The leader addresses the assembly with these or similar words. Pastor: People of God, members of Good Shepherd, do you release Philip from service as your AV Ministry Coordinator? C: We do, and we give thanks to God for our ministry together. The leader addresses the person whose service is concluding. Pastor: Philip, do you recognize and accept the completion of your ministry with Good Shepherd? Response: I do, and I give thanks to God for our ministry together. 11
Pastor: Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you for the work and witness of your servant Philip, who has enriched this congregation and shared his gifts with us. Now bless and preserve Philip, and his wife Kate, at this time of transition. Day by day, guide them and give them what is needed, friends to cheer their way, and a clear vision of that to which you are now calling them. By your Holy Spirit be present in their pilgrimage, that they may travel with the one who is the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen BLESSING FOR PHILIP AND GOOD SHEPHERD Pastor: As you go on your way, may God go with you. May God go before you to show you the way, behind you to encourage you, beside you to befriend you, above you to watch over you, and within you to give you peace. By your Holy Spirit be present in their pilgrimage, that they may travel with the one who is the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.
