TEAMS All currently enrolled students of Merici College Canberra are eligible to play for Merici Netball. Should a Merici Netball player leave the College, they are no longer eligible to play for Merici. Merici Netball endeavours to have a maximum of 10 players in each team to ensure injury, sickness and holidays are covered each week. The final numbers for each team will be dependent on: • the number of registrations for each division; • the need to ensure that all teams have a balance of players across all positions; and • skills, experience and potential of each player. COURT TIME Merici Netball promotes fairness, equity and inclusion for all players and encourages girls to participate irrespective of their skill levels or experience. Throughout the competition rounds, available players will receive equal court time. “Throughout the competition rounds” refers to the games in one season prior to the semi- finals. If a player is away for any reason, late for a match or refuses to play they are considered unavailable. To be eligible to play in the Finals, players must have played a minimum of four (4) round games in the normal season. All Finals series match time is at the discretion of the coaches after each player has had a minimum of two quarters on the court in each match. MERICI NETBALL HANDBOOK FEBRUARY 2020 6
Coaches are required to keep a record of players’ court and bench time and will ensure that as far as is practicable, all players receive equal match play. It is up to the coach to rotate their players’ time off as long as it is equitable and with the best outcome of the team at the forefront of any decision. If a player or parent feels they have been unfairly treated, they should first speak to the coach. If the issue is not resolved the matter can then be escalated by referring it to the Committee where grievance procedures will be applied in line with Merici Netball Grievances and Complaints Policy. BEHAVIOUR POLICY AND CODE OF CONDUCT MERICI NETBALL HANDBOOK FEBRUARY 2020 9
Merici Netball is bound by the Canberra Netball Association (CNA) Sporting Behaviour and Discipline Policy. The policy aims to establish a standard of behaviour consistent with the levels of sportsmanship and conduct that the Canberra and Belconnen Netball Associations expect of members participating in the NCNC and outlines the process for dealing with breaches of the codes of conduct or competition rules. Additionally, both the College and Merici Netball has high expectations regarding behaviour and has set standards for its students. Through our interactions we aim to foster a healthy culture in which high levels of achievement take place within a positive social environment. As such, all players, Merici Netball officials and spectators are required to be aware of and adhere to the Merici College Code of Conduct. The Merici College Code of Conduct is contained in the Merici College Netball Guidelines and Policies. GRIEVANCES AND COMPLAINTS Merici Netball recognises that people associated with the teams will from time to time have a concerns or issue that needs to be resolved in the interest of maintaining good relationships. To ensure that any grievances and/or complaint raised by Merici Netball players, parents, volunteers, Committee members or the general community are dealt with in a prompt, transparent and equitable manner, a grievance and complaints policy has been established detailing how to lodge and deal with grievances and complaints. For more details and the process, please refer to the Merici Netball Grievance and Complaints Policy contained in the Merici Netball Guidelines and Policies document. TRAINING Training is scheduled for each team based on the coach’s availability, the courts used for practice and the majority of players in the team. It is expected that the players attend all training sessions. If unable to attend, notification to the coach is expected from all players or parents. Additional training guidelines for Merici Netball are contained in the Merici Netball Guidelines and Policy document. NETBALL EQUIPMENT Each team receives the following items at the start of a season: MERICI NETBALL HANDBOOK FEBRUARY 2020 10

WORKING WITH VULNERABLE PEOPLE CARD Merici Netball requires those who work with vulnerable people in the capacity of Team Coach, Manager or Committee Member to undertake a Working with Vulnerable People Check and successfully satisfy the requirements of that check. The Working with Vulnerable People Act 2011, commenced on 8 November 2012. It aims to reduce the risk of harm or neglect to vulnerable people in the ACT. The WWVP Act requires those who work or volunteer with vulnerable people to have a background check and be registered. The premise of background checking is that the past behaviour of an individual can provide an indication of the possible future behaviour of that individual. Examples or patterns of abusive or inappropriate behaviour can sometimes be evident in information available for assessment, which includes an individual’s criminal record. The ACT Government considers that the creation of a checking system with appropriate safeguards for people who work with, or who want to work with vulnerable people is consistent with section 28 of the HUMAN RIGHTS ACT 2004. For information on renewing a working with vulnerable people registration refer to the Working with vulnerable people (WWVP) registration renewal page located at accesscanberra.act.gov.au. Compliance checks are carried out by the ACT Government representatives during the season. Merici Netball officials are required to: • hold a current WWVP registration card; • carry your card at all times when involved in a regulated activity; • must produce your card when asked by an authorised person or police; and, • should produce your card when asked by parents and carers MERICI NETBALL HANDBOOK FEBRUARY 2020 11
