Page 3 Welcome to the Zombie Apocalypse Dear Scouts and Scouters, You are cordially invited to attend the 2018 Akela District Fall Camporee, Zombie Apocalypse. The dates are November 2nd – November 4th at Woodfield West. We have a great weekend planned for you if you can survive! This leaders guide will provide you with details of each event along with the schedule for the weekend. Zombies have invaded the camp and no one is truly safe. Scouts will need to test their skills in hopes of making it through the weekend. Scouts will be challenged in emergency first aid, lashings, fire building, orienteering, and a foot race to keep one step ahead of the zombies. As the theme is the Zombie Apocalypse, all events are zombie themed. The day will wrap up with a full-scale zombie vs human battle and a Dutch Oven Potluck dinner (this works best if each Patrol cooks a dish). Registration is open to all Boy Scout Troops in the district, this is also a great event to bring your Arrow of Light Dens. Registration includes a really cool patch, and you can order shirts for just $9.00 each. Shirts are pre- order only and are expected to be a great collector’s items. We are excited to be able to host this year’s event and look forward to seeing you all there! Page 6 Introduction to the Zombie Apocalypse Zombies have taken over Woodfield West scout camp and it is now up to our Scouts to stay safe and take back the camp. Over the course of the weekend each patrol will test their skills while evading the Zombies and doing their best to stay alive. Scouts will need to safely navigate a course (orienteering) while steering clear of Zombies as they will encounter several scenarios along their way. These scenarios include delivering emergency first aid to a zombie attack victim, building a fire to keep the zombies at bay, constructing a barricade to fortify your camp against attack and running a foot race to get to safety. The day will culminate with the ultimate battle for survival to take back the camp back. Patrols will be scored on each event (see scoring sheets for details) First Aid Fire Building Orienteering Lashings Foot Race All Patrols should have a “Ready Bag” that includes all items your patrol may need to successfully complete challenges. If Patrols need to borrow items to complete a challenge, they will lose points. Items that you may want to have in your bag include: Compass First Aid Kit – think what you may need for an emergency Ropes / Twine for knots and lashings Items to start a fire (no matches or lighters) Bonus Point Opportunities (see scoring sheets for details) - Canned food drive – bring a minimum of 1 can for each scout/leader. - Each troop that provides a leader to help run an event will receive bonus points. - Performing a skit at the Saturday Night campfire - zombie themed skits get more points. Page 9 Zombie Apocalypse Event Detail First Aid The Zombies have left your patrol wounded. You must complete 6 challenges to recover to full strength. Use items from your “Ready Bag” to help solve each first aid scenario before starting the next one. You can ask for up to three hints but you will be penalized points. Fastest times that get to a full recovery scores the most points so time is of essence. Fire Building Your patrol has been cut off from civilization and is isolated. Zombies are scurrying around and the only thing keeping them away is a fire. Your task is to build a fire using items from your “Ready Bag”. Matches are available but will cost you points. Patrols must build their fires as quickly as possible and the flame needs to burn through a rope to guarantee your fire is large enough to deter the Zombies from entering your area. Orienteering Zombies have hidden the cure around the forest. It’s your task to find it and get back to the starting point the fastest while being quiet to not alert the Zombies. Use a compass from your “Ready Bag”, your best orienteering skills and knowledge to find the cure by solving trivia questions to advance through the course. You must also know how to measure distance, height, and direction to find the cure before becoming a Zombie. Lashings Your patrol will build a barricade or fort to be used during the End Battle with different knots and lashings as a defense against the Zombies. The more types of lashing or knots used, the more points you’ll collect. You will spend 10-15 minutes reviewing the Clove Hitch and Timber Hitch knots along with Square, Sheer, and Diagonal lashings. You will then have 30-40min to construct a barricade, fort, etc. using the knots and lashings just learned. If your patrol needs assistance completing a lashing or knot, your patrol will lose points. Complete your barricade before the time expires to achieve the maximum defense against the Zombies. Points will be deducted if knots are not tied correctly. Foot Race Scouts must outrun the zombies while using their knowledge of scout skills to help save the camp. Only the fastest scouts will survive. Each patrol will have a relay team of 4 scouts. Each scout will run one leg of the race and answer a scout skill question before they can hand off the baton to the next scout. Each wrong answer given will result in 10 seconds being added to their final race time. Zombie Apocalypse 2018 Akela District Boy Scout Camporee
