Routes Through Calculation Written and mental calculations ( go hand in hand) CPA concrete Pictorial Abstract
Routes through Calculation Mental is not just doing the written method in your head. Mental calculations can also involve jottings / drawings/ numberlines. Written calculations involve the more formal recording. Please refer to two documents on our website Parents handbook 2018 Progression in calculation – Concrete Pictorial Abstract
Mental calculations addition and subtraction Number bonds / facts Strategies Rounding and adjusting 230 – 98 = 230 – 100+2 = Counting on 230 – 227 Near multiples 25 + 27 = 25 + 25 + 2 Partitioning 230 – 67 = 230 – 60 – 7
Mental calculations Multiplication and Division Times tables and related division facts Strategies Multiplying and dividing by 10 100 1000 1.5 x 10 ? Do you just add a zero? Using factors x 8 = x2 x2 x2 ÷8 = ÷2 ÷2 ÷2 X16 = x 8 x 2 ÷16 = ÷8 ÷2 X 25 = x 100 ÷4 , x 50 = x 100 ÷2 or x 5 x 10 Partitioning 8 x 5 = ( 4 x 5 ) + (4 x 5) 18 x 5 = (10 x 5)+ (8 x 5)
Written Calculations Estimate by rounding to nearest 10, 100 ,1000 and use the estimation to check the reasonableness of the answer.
Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication Grid method
Three digit by one digit Three two digit by two digit decimals
Multiplication expanded formal – short compact method
Long multiplication
Division Sharing and grouping I have 24 cakes to share between 6 people how many can they have each? How many plates of 6 cakes can I make if there are 24 people? Context – rounding up or down 15 people are travelling to the theatre. How many cars will I need if each car can take 4 people ? 15 people are travelling to the theatre? How many full cars will there be if each car can take 4 people?
Division
Practical activities engaging the children in problem solving rather than just recalling of facts. Fractions Would you rather have ¾ or 5/8 of the bar of chocolate? Why? Time (reading a timetable) Which train would I need to catch to be in Dorridge at 17:50? Why Measurement inc imperial measures Estimation : What is the approximate weight of an apple? 5g 50g 500g Reading / spelling and understanding of mathematical vocabulary.
