Provincial Stay-at-home orders The Government of Ontario has declared a second Provincial Emergency, issued under s 7.0.1 (1) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMPCA). This followed the COVID-19 Advisory for Ontario Science Table’s update on COVID-19 Projections. • A notable key finding was that the new variant, SARS CoV 2 (B117) in Ontario, could drive much higher case counts, ICU occupancy and mortality with a doubling time for cases dropping to 10 days by March.
Provincial Stay-at-home orders • The following enhanced public health measures came into effect on January 13, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. – Outdoor public gatherings and social gatherings are restricted to five people – Individuals are required to wear a mask or face covering while indoors and are recommended to wear them outdoors when unable to maintain a 2 meter distance from others. – All non-essential retail stores, including hardware stores, alcohol retailers, and those offering curbside pickup or delivery, must open no earlier than 7:00 a.m. and close no later than 8:00 p.m. – This does not apply to pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, or stores that primarily sell food such as restaurants offering takeout or delivery.
Provincial Stay-at-home orders – Non-essential construction like below-grade construction has been restricted, while survey construction may continue. – Provincial offences officers, Ontario Provincial Police, local police forces, bylaw officers, and provincial workplace inspectors have the authority to perform the following; • issue a ticket and or fine to individuals who do not comply with the stay-at-home-order, • issue a ticket and or fine to those not wearing a mask or face covering in indoors public • issue a ticket and or fine to retail operators and companies who do not enforce requirements under orders under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act (ROA) or EMPCA. • temporarily close a premise and disperse individuals who are in contravention of gathering limits, and • disperse people who are gathering, regardless whether a premise has been closed or remains open such as a park

COVID-19 Vaccine Update
Local progress • Phase 1 with prioritization for long-term care and high-risk retirement home residents, staff, and essential caregivers. The goal is to vaccinate all long-term care and high-risk retirement home residents as soon as possible. – Due to the scarceness of COVID-19 vaccine supply, previously infected COVID-19 cases are not eligible to receive the vaccine at this. – Eligibility will be reviewed weekly and will be dependent on vaccine supply and Provincial direction. – Please see the MLHU’s COVID-19 vaccine web page for further updates.
Local progress • Forward deployment of Pfizer to Chelsea Park LTCH/RH Wednesday ➢Approximately 268 vaccines given by MLHU’s team • Cumulative total of 8173 vaccines administered to date at the Agriplex (as of Jan 14/21) • Prioritization • Given the current supply that exists and is forecasted, in order to forward deploy the vaccine to LTCH homes, the Agriplex is currently closed to new appointments
mRNA vaccines • SARS-CoV-2 virus is covered with proteins, which look like spikes • mRNA vaccines provide your body the instructions to make the spike protein of the virus • When your body makes the protein, your body’s immune system recognizes it as something that isn’t supposed to be there • Your body will make antibodies specifically targeting the protein, which will help your body recognize more rapidly if the real virus ever showed up
The vaccine does not interact with or change your DNA!
Pfizer trial • Over 36,000 people participated – Half got a placebo and half got the vaccine – There were 162 cases in the group that got the placebo vs. only 8 cases in the group that got the vaccine – This means the vaccine was ~95% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19
Moderna trial • Over 28,000 people participated – Half got a placebo and half got the vaccine – There were 185 cases in the group that got the placebo vs. only 11 cases in the group that got the vaccine – This means the vaccine was ~94% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19
Moderna vs. Pfizer? • Both are really good at preventing COVID- 19 • Stability – Pfizer is stored in ultra-low freezers (-60 to -80 degrees C); stable for 5 days in the fridge – Moderna is stored in low freezers (-20 degrees C); stable for 30 days in the fridge
Moderna and Pfizer side effects • Common side effects (more than 1 in 10 people) – Injection site pain, fatigue, chills, fever • Severe side effects were very rare • No vaccine-related deaths • Side effects more common with second dose
Questions re: eligibility • “Who can get it?” is a different question than ‘who can get it now?” • Scarcity of the vaccine means that some people who will eventually get the vaccine are not getting it now
Eligibility criteria of note • Pregnancy • Breastfeeding • Immunosuppression • Allergies to non-vaccines • Previous COVID-19 cases
Previous COVID-19 cases • Individuals with previously PCR-confirmed COVID-19 can still receive the vaccine • However, given the scarce supply and the assumption over some immunity, in order to maximize impact we are not currently vaccinating those who are previously positive
