A piece of Australian Post history finds a new home in town Last July, a piece of Australian Postmaster’s Associ- ation history has been kindly donated to our town. Mr. John Connolly, the grandson of Life Honorary Membership of the Australian Postmaster’s Associa- tion recipient, Mr Frank Connolly, has visited Yar- loop and graciously donated his grandfather’s award to our historical town. “My family felt that following the fire disaster that Yarloop experienced, us giving this gift (cup) that meant so much to my grandfather, back to the town was an important piece of history that showed the true spirit of the people of Yarloop”, Life Honorary Membership of the Australian according to John. Postmaster’s Association awarded to Mr Connolly Excerpt from the Yarloop Valedictory 1967: “The residents of Yarloop farewelled their Postmaster Mr Frank Connolly on a Wednesday night in 1964 with a dinner held at the Yarloop Hotel. The dinner and following celebration was attended by most lo- cals and those who had the pleasure of knowing Mr Connolly. The Rev. Father Ryan in making a presentation of a fruit stand and knives to Mr Connolly, said that he regarded it as a distinct compliment to have been called upon to make the presentation on behalf of their many friends Mr and Mrs Connolly had made during their sojourn in Yarloop. Mr Frank Connolly worked in many small West Australian towns but was also relocated to Queensland in 1955 and moved again when he was transferred to Canberra in 1960. He had always realised his obli- gations to the public. Mr & Mrs Connolly were highly regarded in the community not only for the work he did as Postmaster but also being involved in the local community, it is said although Mr Connolly was not a first class crick- eter he always enjoyed the game. Mr Connolly thanked all for their good wishes and the presentations. When he arrived in Yarloop he received very many manifestations of kindness and throughout his term he had found the people con- siderate and helpful. He had received every courtesy from the public and had attempted to treat them similarly”. According to John, his grandfather lived in Applecross in Perth until he died in 1980. The cup is now in the Yarloop Post Office should anyone wish to see it. 2
Father’s Day 2020 Father’s Day is a celebration of fathers, paternal bonds and the in fluence of fathers in our society. Do you know that Father’s Day ce- lebration began when a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington decided she wanted to designate a day for her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in church. This was back in 1909. He was a single father who reared Sonora and 5 of her siblings. In Australia, we celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday of Sep- tember. We are one of the four countries in the world to celebrate it this month. The others being New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Discovering Essential Oils What are essential oils? Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that are harvested through careful steam distillation, cold pressing or resin-tapping. How to use essential oils? Topically. You can apply essential oils to most parts of your body, but you may want to be cautious of your most sensitive skin. Carrier oils are usually used to dilute them and they don’t interfere with an essential oil’s therapeutic properties. Inhalation/ Diffusion. This is probably the most popular way of using essential oils. One may use a diffuser or just put 3-5 drops of your favourite oil on a cotton ball and place in an area where you want its scent to disperse. Internal Absorption (Culinary). Essential oils provide a healthy boost when used in the kitchen. Because of a sig- nificantly longer (indefinite!) shelf life, they ultimately trump dried herbs and spices for imperishability. Essential oils are very potent so you have to be careful when using them. As we are different and quirky in our own way, we all have different reaction to them. And as with everything else, learning how to properly use them is a process. 3

This is a wonderful time to fertilise your garden. Grass crowns will collect the fertiliser, augmenting the chances for growth. Some tips for an amazing garden this spring: Garden Update. Apply a moderate-release complete garden feed to all grass areas. You can use a metal rake to eliminate any build-up of dead growth. If your garden is looking reseed and sparse, dig in some water and organic matter, along with a soil wetting agent. Also, make sure you keep everyone off areas that are being revamped until the new grass is growing healthily. Top-up Organic Mulch. A prompt way to spruce up your lawn, save water and cut weeds at the same time during spring is with a load of mulch. Eliminate encroaching grass throughout lawn beds, and spread organic mulch all over exposed soil. Look Out for Pests. Various insects and mites can damage vari- ous home gardens at all stages of growth. When using pesticides, always follow the directions on the label. Spraying in the evening is the most effective. 6
Telehealth at YCRC Yarloop CRC now offers residents a facility to attend Telehealth appointments. Telehealth is a health appointment provided by video link, rather than the patient having to travel to see their Public Health Specialist in person. Not all Health appointments are appropriate to be held via Telehealth, however when they are, this saves the patient time, cost and anxiety of travelling to their Health Specialist. A telehealth appointment is just like any other medical appointment – except you will see the specialist on a screen in a private room at your local health center. You don’t have to operate any of the videoconferencing equipment yourself and most people say it is just like being in the room with the specialist. You can also take a family member or support person with you for the appointment. Previously Yarloop patients would have attended any Telehealth appointments at Harvey Hospital, however with the new Yarloop CRC facilities offering this service, Yarloop patients will have an option to have these appointments even closer to home. If you are a public patient and you have upcoming Specialist appointments, you should discuss with your health service provider whether your appointment can be conducted by telehealth. If this is possible, your local telehealth team will contact you with the relevant details. Your local Telehealth team is SW Telehealth on 97222794. Are you over 50 and would like access to FREE digital literacy programs?
