N P S U C AUGUST 2020 NEWSLETTER Presidents Report Welcome The days are getting longer, and daylight savings isn’t far away. It’s great news for us as the new season approaches. Covid doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, PLATINUM and managing with the disease in New Zealand (including health and economic issues) has become the new norm. It seems likely that Level 2 will be commonplace over the SPONSORS next few months. We are well positioned to run our competitions under Level 2, noting we were one of the first, if not the first club, to run a competition following lockdown. NPSUC Prizegiving Saturday 26th September 1920’s theme Our Annual Prizegiving is happening on Saturday 26th September from 6.30pm. On that night the entire clubrooms are used by the Prizegiving, and tickets are available for pur- chase from the Bar up until Sunday 20th September. We will be running under Covid Level 2 or 1. Under Level 2 tickets are restricted to 90 attendees – first in first served. Adult tickets $30 and Children 12 and under $15. The night is a celebration of the year and you are welcome to purchase tickets, even if you don’t think you might have won an award. Tickets include food, entertainment and the Presidents Shout. We have a great live band for the night, plus cocktails in theme for the era. NPSUC AGM 23rd September Our AGM is happening at 7.30pm Wednesday 23rd September. The closing date for Remit’s has now passed (14 days prior), with only one Remit received by the Secretary – one from the Treasurer to keep the membership fees the same for next year. Nomination for Committee is open until 7 days prior to the AGM, so must be received by Wednesday 16th September – if you are possibly interested in becoming a committee member but aren’t quite sure on what is involved, feel free to contact me by email or phone. We encourage all members in the club to come along – there are various presenta- tions / reports on the night amongst the Agenda – including presentations from the President, Treasurer, and the like, followed by a Presidents Shout. Behaviour A reminder that being a member at our club requires reasonable behaviour at all times – this includes behaviour toward other members, staff and visitors. This applies every- where – including our clubrooms, at sea, the boat ramp, and online. Club kitchen – new menu and opening during daytime Mandy, our kitchen manager, has released a new Spring menu with a few changes suit- ed to the warmer season. We are planning for the kitchen opening during the weekends (Brunch etc) - that will start on 3rd October for the summer period, with exact times to be confirmed – noting that the kitchen will likely close after Brunch and re-open at 5pm lat- er in the day. We will be offering barista made coffees, cold (non-alcoholic) drinks, as well as cabinet food in addition to choices from the menu. An exciting development, but also something being done in a cautious manner, specifically around opening hours etc. Sponsors Night We held the annual sponsors night on 28th August, with the 2020/21 Fishgrid sold to the sponsors from the past season. The night went well, and this year we included a sit- down meal with a short presentation. The new sponsors grid is now available on the website (https://www.npsuc.co.nz/uploads/202021%20Season%20Fish_grid.pdf) and ready for use in our season’s competitions. We’ve already had a number of sponsors renew their support for the upcoming season, which is great to see.
Member points A reminder that member points at the bar are reset soon, meaning any unused points GOLD from 1 November are lost. Feel free to use them up before that date. Strategic planning SPONSORS The draft strategic plan has progressed – recently a survey was issued by email to members. Feedback for the survey closes on 20th September. We are also going to have some targeted interactive sessions. Once feedback is received, the strategic plan will be completed, including specific ac- tions and a Financial plan. Roof The roof repairs are now complete – a big thanks to Central Roofing for completing the work. It’s a timely reminder of the scale of costs that we face from time to time with a facility as large as ours – the repairs cost approximately $13,000 and are Repairs and Maintenance to come out of our annual expenses. It’s great that our clubrooms are again leak free. Replacements – Lighting and TVs A number of our light fittings in the kitchen and bar have been replaced. We are contin- uing to undertake progressive lighting upgrades around the outside of the building to improve safety and security. We are in the process of replacing the TV by the Black Marlin – it stopped operating properly. If not replaced by the time you read this, it will be soon after – we have up- sized from a 55” to a 65” TV. That leaves only one TV that hasn’t been replaced in the last couple of years. Membership database We are in the process of implementing a new membership database. This is an online platform and we will be having our upcoming season membership renewals run through this system, which means a much more streamlined process for entering your membership details and making payment. We expect the first season’s sign up to be a touch more involved than it will be in subsequent years, as people have to enter their details for the first time – but subsequent seasons will see a renewal request issued, making the process much faster, easier and accurate for all. This change also means we can move away from annual membership cards – we will be issuing a simple mem- bership card. Within the system we also have an option for digital membership cards – something we will have a closer look at after we have the system up and running. We will still have the option for people to sign up or renew membership at the bar, ensuring that people who don’t have a computer can sign up. We will send out more information after the AGM. Events and Promotions Manager We have a new Events and Promotions Manager, Natasha McGlinchey. Natasha re- places Jemma Ryan, who left us to take up full time study. Natasha started with us this week and is currently being introduced to the club systems and procedures. As she finds her feet in the new role, we are going to progress an increased level of promo- tion/marketing of the club – to members, sponsors and events/functions (both our own and venue hire). Welcome on board Natasha. That’s all for now – look forward to seeing you down the club - tight lines. Regards Ian Steele 0276 881 441
New Zealand Sportfishing Council (NZSFC) NZ Sportfishing Council (NZSFC) AGM SILVER Our National peak body, NZSFC, holds it’s AGM at the Bay of Islands Sportfishing SPONSORS Club on 18/19 September. Peter (Sauce) Saunders, Lee Drummond and Ian Steele (NZSFC Vice President) are attending and representing NPSUC. Topical issues this year are related to Covid, and support for Clubs – including a discussion on member benefits and NZSFC affiliation fees – whether to put affiliation fees up, down or stay the same. There are no proposed changes to NZSFC angling rules or NZSFC Na- tionals rules. The NPSUC committee reviewed all remits for the NZSFC AGM in at the August Committee meeting, and have recorded planned direction for those remits – largely staying a sensible course for all remits including voting for no notable change in affili- ation fees. Our Club has sent a proposal to NZSFC to host the 2022 AGM at our clubrooms – if successful, will mean that club delegates come from the affiliated 54 member clubs around the country to participate in the 2022 NZSFC AGM. We will find out at this years NZSFC AGM (next week) how our proposal has fared. Regards NZSFC Club Delegates – Sauce, Lee and Ian Fishing update Winter fishing has been pretty typical – lots of spikeys, ‘couda, and strong winds. For those that do get out the snapper seem to be down south, and not alot off town. Spring fishing is coming up fast and we are all looking forward to some fat snapper. Energy Sector Competition – 21st November This year, and with the blessing of existing Energy Sector Competition sponsors, the club is also sponsoring this event. Due to the effect of Covid in the Energy industry this year the sponsorship is down a bit in the competition, and the Club’s sponsorship means that Club members can enter this year’s competition. Entry forms are at the clubrooms. Entries ($50) close soon (5th October), so if you are keen make sure you get moving. Early birds close 21st September. BRONZE Mico Competition 2021 If there are any club skippers that are interested in taking some plumbers out in the SPONSORS 2021 Competition to be held on 5th Feb 2021, please contact Dan Johanson at Mico (daniel.johanson@mico.nz). It’s a great comp and club skippers are well looked after by their crew. Season 2020/2021 The dates for the upcoming season have been set. Refer to posters around the club and also on the club website (https://www.npsuc.co.nz/uploads/Comp%20dates% 202020-2021.pdf). It seems that the ITU Triatholon is on the same weekend sched- uled for the Take a Kid Fishing day, so we are likely to move that date. Top Boat Competitions 2020/21 There are no changes to the basis of the Top Boat points part of the 2020/21 Top Boat competitions (Snapper, Tarakihi, Gurnard, Snapper and Blue Cod) – its still 3 fish of each species for each comp, with a maximum of 4 fish each species (20 total) across the 4 competitions. Rules available here (https://www.npsuc.co.nz/uploads/ Top%20Boat%20Rules%202020-2021%20Season.pdf). A tweak has been made to the Top 10 – it will now be the Top 9, with Crayfish still able to be weighed for a po- tential prize after the Brass Monkey, but wont form part of the Top 10. There won’t be a separate length category for Kahawai. While the Club is keen to support length-based options, last year Kahawai were simply measured as well as weighed, and not adding any conservation benefit and that the weigh station took longer to process. We are continuing the early bird draw for those that enter all 4 competitions prior to the Memorial being fished. For the boats that enter as early birds, there is the added benefit of only signing one disclaimer for all 4 comps (skippers still need to attend briefings and sign the attendance register). Crew can be added or removed between comps, as normal. Skippers that don’t enter their boat as an early bird must sign a disclaimer for each of the 4 competitions. Health and Safety Plan Our Health and Safety plan has been reviewed for the upcoming season, and a copy is available on this link (https://www.npsuc.co.nz/uploads/NPSUC%20Health%20% 20Safety%20Plan%201.10.2020.pdf).
