MAY 2018 PASTEL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VOLUME 3 ISSUE 3 PRESIDENT’S MARCH MIKE ISHIKAWA EDE STREIFF’S MESSAGE MEETING DEMONSTRATION DEMONSTRATION President’s Message Dear PSSC, Happy Spring! What a high-energy reception we had for our 9th Annual PSSC Members’ Exhibition! It was super exciting to see the large crowds and media attention for our 144 pastel paintings on display and to celebrate our accomplishments together. It was also gratifying to see Tony Allain’s amazing demonstration of three pastel paintings, and then to have them auctioned off on the spot to benefit PSSC and our exhibition charity, the Switzer Learning Center of Torrance. Congratulations to everyone who exhibited their work, and to our many award- winners! You can see their pictures in this newsletter. Again, thank you to our juror Liz Haywood-Sullivan, and to our generous judge, demonstrator and workshop HTTP://WWW.PASTELSOCAL.COM !1

MAY 2018 PASTEL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VOLUME 3 ISSUE 3 May Demonstration by Mike Ishikawa Mike Ishikawa is an Architect by profession. During his vacations, or any time he had some free time, he sketched with his pen and ink, filling many sketch books with interesting places he visited with his wife Miki, becoming a postcard of his travels. Semi- retirement allowed some time to think about a new interest, which led to pastel painting in early 2009. He loves using pastels, the vibrant colors are unlimited, being a skier, hiker, and fisherman, painting the outdoor landscape has been one of his passions. He uses bold bright colors, strong strokes, shades, shadows, and varied textures to create an image that is similar to the actual image, but with more interest and a “painterly” (non-photographic) quality to the painting. He paints as a hobby and his favorite subjects are seascapes around the south bay, old fishing boats, Sierra Nevada mountains, deserts and night images of buildings. He is a member of the Southern California Pastel Society and Pacific Art Guild of Palos Verdes. HTTP://WWW.PASTELSOCAL.COM !3
